The (Marian) Call of Mars

I love many things in the ‘verse, but two of them are Mars and Marian Call. And Steven Hammond, a JPL Solar System Ambassador, has combined them both: he made a video of Mars images set to the tune Good Old Girls by Marian.

Nice! The song wasn’t originally about Mars, it was about… well, I’ll let you figure it out. If you can’t, ask a Battlestar fan. Though I think there is definitely some Serenity overlap going on there too.

Steven has a high-res version of the movie for download as well. If you’re a teacher, this might be a good way to get your students interested in astronomy… especially if they already like Battlestar!

[...] Ik ben niet echt weg van de muziek (smaken verschillen hoor), maar de combinatie met die mooie Marsfoto’s, die gemaakt zijn door diverse Marsmissies, is uitstekend. Kortom, kijken naar deze clip. Bron: Bad Astronomy. [...]

    @Larian

An educated soldier is a soldier who questions. Questions lead to disobedience. Ignorance, on the other hand, is easily controlled. Oh, and war is peace. 2+2=5. Big Brother is watching you.

Marian has such a lovely voice that in a rational universe, she would be one of the most respected Divas,,,

Great proof of life on Mars, the rocket ships look like they can destroy us from there. Too bad Larien LeQuella won’t be able to see them until they reach earth to destroy us. (yes just joking Larien)

While we’re on BSG-inspired songs, here’s the Caprican planetary anthem, especially for fans of BSG, Smallville, Dark Angel and all those other American TV shows (because “America” doesn’t always mean “USA”, remember):

    O Caprica!
    Our planetary home!
True alien world of glass and shining chrome!
So much unlike any Earthly place,
A strange world, through and through…
    Though a little like Metropolis…
    New York… Seattle too…
God, now I think, it’s all the same…
O Caprica, Vancouver is your name!

The song kind of matches the martian landscape.

Thanks for that. I am very sentimental about all the little robots we’ve sent out to space, Pioneer and Voyager especially, but our little undaunted Mars rovers are very close to my heart.

They just keep on going and sending us back info. On a lot less computing power than I’m typing on now.

    :)

Be careful when visiting Vancouver, there be cylons there.

I don’t know, this Martian/BSG fusion has my brain doing funny things, like imagining an alternate BSG intro:

“The MER were Created by Man…”

Um, they haven’t rebelled have they?

I need narration. I want to find those pics. I’ve seen a few of these and I want to see the hi-res of some of those used in the video.

Nitpick: Isn’t the track called “Good Old Girl” rather than “Good Old Girls”?

    Awesome. :-D

Seconding (#4.) Gary Ansorge there too. :-)
