Calling people unethical, make you sick, etc., because they choose differently than you with THEIR property and THEIR persons should make ANY reader wary-- actually, any reader should be wary concerning statist inclined researchers regardless of prestige or political standing.

Don't allow the "antivaxxers make me sick" nonsense to dissuade you from thinking independently. If you do your own research and come to the same conclusion that vaccinations are beneficial, great, if not, great. The point is to think for yourself; not to allow others to think for you irregardless of their inability to tolerate your self-governance.

I feel really, really bad for all the autistic kids who are growing up now, and will soon read how their parents would have rather they died than be the people they are.

I agree that I've been unhappy with those anti-vax posts on Huffington Post, especially by Kennedy (who otherwise is a very good advocate for the environment and social justice, but he's nuts on this vaccination thing).

But I think rather than dismissing HuffPo you should try to get published on it. It is am increasingly important media outlet, other than those anti-vax articles it has many excellent writers and posts, and I think YOUR particular writing style and your advocacy or true science would be welcome by its readers.

@dilapidus: How about the third post in the comments by Larian LeQuella? Start there.

tim Says:
April 28th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
“her campaign, which, if successful, will bring back measles and polio to our children. Read it if you dare.”

That’s where I stopped reading your rant.

What about that line made you stop reading? The fact that it's the truth and already happening?

Dilapidus, I didn't claim to have disproved them; I said that they had been disproven. That is, by others, previously, in other vaccination threads.

By the way, you do realise that needle-stick is another way that Hep B can be transmitted, don't you? And that addicts aren't the most tidy of people when it comes to disposing of their needles? So a child is at risk especially as they aren't the most discriminating at what they touch or pick up.

Out of curiosity, which brands of the Hep B vaccine contain thimerosal? According to www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/Thimerosal.htm none of the vaccines for Hep B, whether singly or in combination, contain thimerosal.

@Dilapidus
I'm not saying don't eat chocolate cake. But do you know what goes into chocolate cake? You owe your family to find out what is in each chocolate cake. It is your duty to your family and community to know what goes into chocolate cake.

So something like that isn't framed to scare people from chocolate cake?

@Mark Hansen
I'm not sure what claims you think you have disproved. But the answers are, in order: None.

I did not make any claims about the MMR vaccine, and the article that I read talked about vaccines in general for the most part. It made good points about understanding exactly what is put into your child's body and why. It is possible to read my note as suggesting that Hep B vaccines contain thimerosal. You could make that claim and I'd gladly clarify. In fact, I have gone ahead and clarified anyway.

Mr. Hansen, I know better than to expect rigor here, but is MMR the only vaccine your children got? Not mine, that's certain. I mentioned Hep B, did your doctor give your child a Hep B vaccination despite the mother not having Hep B or any risk factors?

@drksky
What 'refutations' are to be found here? I find little more than vitriol from people who didn't bother to read the article. The article never says don't vaccinate, it says understand exactly what is in each vaccination and why. It suggests that you, as a parent, have final responsibility for your child's health as well as a solemn duty to the community.

I realize this is just a blog, but Mr. Plait's knee jerk irresponsible description of Mr. Carrey's article is far beneath the standards of Discover magazine.
