Stick Science winners!

The winners of the Florida Citizens for Science "Stick Science" contest have been announced! This was a contest for people to boil down issues in the public misunderstanding of science into a stick figure cartoon. I was a judge, along with Genie Scott, Carl Zimmer, and Kate Miller.

My congratulations to Richard Korzekwa, Benjamin Tichy, and Brooke Lundquist for their winning entries.

And speaking of contests, don’t forget the Capture the Universe astrophotography contest, which runs through the end of the month of June.

My wife kicked my @$$ in that contest! I only got 5th place. :(

And I don’t have the equipment or location to make any good pictures for the astrophotography contest. :(

I was wondering if Brooke was related to you.

Congratulations to the Lundquists. Is this a yearly contest? I’m thinking of submitting a work next year.

The really funny thing about her entry was that she wasn’t up for it. I made my entry and kept badgering her to make hers. Then she ended up with her finger in a cast (dropped the lemon tree planter on her hand) so I ended up drawing it for her. The whole time she kept saying that my idea was so much better than hers…

I’m betting Dr. Plait “downgraded” my entry because of my creepy mancrush on him!

No, but honestly, I was just teasing Phil for his love of Fwil Fwheaton. No offense, Phil.

Hmmm, that’s odd… I just discovered a glitch in the system.

Hey, I made the top ten! (There were more than ten entries, right?)

How do you know? They only listed the top three in order, right?

The email from the site before this was posted had this in the email:

FYI: Both you and Steve made it into the top ten. You can let Steve know
that he came in fifth place. Since you beat him, make sure he buys you
    dinner!

Man crush’s that evolve into comments on blogs are either “Bro-mance’s” or stalking.

And here I am having a field day at BA’s old site, reading through very informative Q&A’s from the past decade! Why buy Astronomy for Dummies when the answers are here for free? We come to learn, and know the fun of it.

Btw, Mr. Lundquist, just for ending up with a cast on her finger, your wife deserves the dinner. :)

Phil, not sure where else to reach you, but you should check out this video of John Hodgman speaking to the president about the philosophy of nerds. I predict its right up your alley.

    A short song for her:
Lemon tree very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet
But drop a planter on my hand, you better take me out to eat!

    ;)

I was going to enter with one about how people mistakenly think there’s no gravity in orbit, but it deviated too much from the “it’s only a theory” theme.

I got an email from Mr. Brandon Haught. With his permission, I make it public here, for the benefit of those who might be curious:

Subject: Re: About the Stick Science Contest

I honestly don’t know if it will be annual or not. This is the first time
doing it. I think part of that decision will rest on getting another stack
of good prizes and some celebrity judges next year. If I can round all
that up like I managed to do this year, then I probably will give it
    another go.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

    >> Hi, I just wanted to ask if the Stick Science Contest is an annual event.

*Thanks to Mr. Haught for replying. I wish him the best for next year’s events.
