Phil, yours is the first RSS feed on my list, and yet I still completely missed this. The excitement (good and bad) of the last week means I’ve been a bit behind on reading this stuff. Thankfully Stephanie Zvan linked it at her super-linking-post.

As cool as it would have been to have you involved, at least Jodi wouldn’t have ended up in the uncomfortable position of having to have you and PZ fight for the top spot in the chain. Thanks for being the bigger man!

OMG!
I’m so sorry I missed this Phil. I didn’t expect to see anything here since I knew how insanely busy you were. But thanks everyone (even though I’m crazy late, please don’t hate me)!
I’ve said it a thousand times but I’m still so amazed to look around and find posts like these, where the whole proposal thing has just expanded out across the blogosphere. It’s so cool and totally more than I was expecting, so thanks again!

If you went into debt for your party you spent too much on it. If you invited a bunch of relatives you’ll never see again, you invited the wrong people (barring, you know, deaths and the like, of course).

See, that’s another point I’d like to make. Why does it matter to the government if you’re married or just living together? I’d have to give her social security number and some other info, regardless. Why can’t I name whomever I want for a tax break or to put on my insurance? I think the “institution of marriage” is too much based in religious traditions for the State to have to recognize.

Even the “damn good party” is sometimes a big mistake. Couples will start their lives together by going way into debt to feed a bunch of relatives, a lot of whom they’ll never see again.

And just so I’m not made out to be a bitter, lonely old man who can’t find anyone to marry, I’ve been living with my girlfriend for 14 years. So I’m a bitter old man, but not a lonely one.

A “piece of paper” does confer some advantages. A few years ago, friends of mine got married after living together for years, and were quite open about it being for financial reasons. His writing career was finally taking off (he’s now quite a well-known author in his genre) and being ‘legal’ gives them a nice tax break. Plus he has a health problem that could kill him early and he wants his partner to be able to automatically inherit all his royalties and literary estate.
Also, a marriage ceremony (of any kind) give the couple the chance to declare their partnership to the world. And it’s an excuse for a damm good party. So – party on dudes!
