The official mass market trade paperback version of my book Death from the Skies! doesn’t come out until September, but the awesome folks at Penguin Publishing (after I beg and whined) were able to get a few copies sent to Comic Con. I hadn’t seen it before, so it was totally cool to see it in its native habitat: on a bookshelf.

I had a signing at the Con, and it was fun to sit and chat with folks and sign their copies. I have done a few signings before, but it’s different when the book seems so shiny and new again!
And stay tuned; as soon as I write up descriptions and such I’ll have my pix from Comic Con posted.

Paperback, eh? I’ll be getting me a copy.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
I did enjoy “Death From the Skies!” but now I have to go buy the paperback too?
July 28th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
That is an awesome cover! I guess I’ll be shelling out the dough now, myself!
July 28th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Now I wish I hadn’t bought the hardcover. That cover is just too awesome.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
You wrote a comic book?
July 28th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Who illustrated the cover? It looks really cool.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
that looks like a trade paperback, not a mass-market.
July 28th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Fred, you’re right! I meant mass marketed, so I fixed it.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
It’s natural place is sitting on a pile of clothes next to my bed (or next to the toilet), not on a bookshelf!
July 28th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Silly book-cover cartoon man — running won’t save you!
July 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
[que announcer man voice]
Was SuperMan a Spy? And Death From The Skies on the same shelf?!?!
Is there some underlying meaning to this?
Did SuperMan hurl a giant meteor at Earth and watch the destruction from Space through his Galileoscope?!?!
Will Phil ever admit to being a Ex-NASA Space Spy and part of a massive cover-up to hide the truth that SuperMan is really evil?!?!?
All this and more, on the next Episode of Bad Astronomy.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
They seem to be running away from a giant meatball. That’s not the end of the world. It’s the start of leftovers fro the next 2 months of lunches.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
So Phil, are you working on anything new as a sequel?
July 28th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Phil, you look so nice and relaxed in that picture.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Oh, I must say that this cover really is much better than the dust sleeve. Lots of love for that one.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
dude, where’s the audiobook for itunes? I was looking for it to listen to on cross state trips.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Love the EC Comic style cover.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
@ND
“On Top of Spaghetti” comes to mind.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
*Bender voice* PHILIP?!?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Awesome cover, almost makes me want to get the paperback instead of Kindle version.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Superman isn’t a spy, he’s Jesus.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
ND, it really is the end of the world. It’s the meatball of the apocalypse! Oh mighty FSM, spare your true believers from your wrathful apocalyptic meatball!
July 28th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Phil, you know the Quality Paperback Book Club has been selling DftS! in Quality Paperback form for several months now, right? I got my copy from them as soon as it was available.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Congrats! I’ll have to pick it up when it comes out. But, I have to say that I am actually doubly thrilled about that picture, because I follow the blog of the author of Was Superman A Spy? as well. Very cool to see them both on the same shelf like that.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
It can’t be Phil on the cover, the guys head is not shiny.
@Todd W,”covered with cheese”.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Mmmmmm, meatball of DOOM! raarrggggh,.
July 28th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Seeing the above image just made me go on Amazon and buy a book. It was all of one minute from opening Bad Astronomy up to confirming my checkout.
I can’t wait until my new copy of “Was Superman A Spy?” gets here!
July 28th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
I got my copy at Comic Con. Thanks for the autograph, Phil!
July 28th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Eek! I don’t know what’s scarier; the book or Phil’s expression! Congratulations on the paperback!
July 28th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Bwahahah! The bottom photo should be fired off to everyone who thinks that scientists are ice-cold intellectuals who never descend from their refrigerated ivory towers of academia. It lays that and a few more related stereotypes to rest, and without words.
Who’s the hirsute fellow holding DEATH over your head, by the way?
July 28th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Overused suffix… OF DEATH!!!!!
July 28th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
The end of the world looks to be an invasion… of Sock and Glove puppets!
I for one welcome our sock puppet overlords.
July 28th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Nice! It’s about time. I do 90 percent of my reading on the subway (it’s a long commute), so hardcovers, much as I love ‘em, are just a pain. Sign me up! Been waiting for this. Great cover, incidentally.
July 28th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
I feel sorry for the people in the illustration…
But on the bright side, I like that cover more. ^_^
July 28th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Phil, you wrote a book???
(Can’t believe I’m the first to ask at post 34
July 28th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Great cover. I second the motion, much better than the hard cover jacket.
Grumble, grumble…s’pose I gotta go buy the friggin’ paperback now…grumble grumble…mumble mrph.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

God dammit I just got the hardcover edition two weeks ago. Now I have to sell it/give it away to have an awesome cover and not feel like a chump.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:34 am
Any chance of an English metric edition?
July 29th, 2009 at 4:23 am
The coolest cover ever ….
July 29th, 2009 at 5:11 am
Ah man that new cover is awesome, makes me wish I didn’t already own a copy of the book.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:47 am
You’re sandwitched between two literary gems there. Glad to see it in paperback, been wanting to read this for a while but i cant relax with a hard cover.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:52 am
@Buzz Parsec
Well, I had a variant up at post #5.
@Davidlpf
That song is a prophecy. The world will end when the FSM sneezes!
July 29th, 2009 at 7:27 am
now that’s a nice sternocleidomastoid muscle you have there in your neck.
July 29th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Well, *I* like the hardcover better. I don’t regret the extra wasted money at all. Nope. Not a bit.
