My friend, the physicist and rock star and TV documentary host Brian Cox will be on "The Colbert Report" tonight, Wednesday October 28! I assume Brian’ll be plugging his new book, Why E= mc2, which I have read and is excellent (review coming soon).
Brian is quite funny (as you may have noticed) and comfortable on television, so I suspect this will be quite a treat.
And congrats for him being able to do something I have yet to achieve: goad Colbert into an invitation. I hold out hope: eventually he’ll run out astronomers to interview, and he’ll have to have me on the show. And that’s the Wørd.

Oooo – I wonder if they’ll talk about the time-travelling ghosts who are trying to sabotage the LHC…
Off-Topic – Ares 1-X just launched, very successfully. Whoohoo!

Who is Brian Cox?

Brian Cox wrote a book?

When he runs out he will just have Neil deGrasse Tyson on again. Sorry. I would greatly enjoy seeing you on though, as I am eagerly awaiting your appearance on LA Ink. My wife enjoys the show (I am not really a fan, too much manufactured drama) and it will give us something to do together.

I saw Brian Cox on a series of docs on Science Channel a couple weeks ago.. they were quite good. =) I might actually tune in to the Colbert Report for this one…

Good luck, Phil!
Btw: Another review is coming? Didn’t you say you make almost none? Strange

Brian’s book is great. I haven’t quite finished it, but it’s been fascinating so far. It’s understandable for someone, like me, who doesn’t really have any background with the physics involved, but goes much deeper than just a glossed over general concept.

I’m sorry, but the hardhat over the ball cap is still incredibly dorky.
(You can take that as a compliment, if you want)

I would just like to reassert my huge man crush on Dr. Brian Cox.

Why didn’t you speak up before? I’ll put a word in. Can you make it some time next summer?

Brian Cox makes me feel giggly

Why does every picture posted have to have Phil’s mug prominently displayed in it. No matter who he is supposed to be highlighting, there is Phil’s rictus trying to steal the show.
Especially irritating to me was the video he showed with Ariane Sherine where Phil, the interviewER, was the star and the lovely Ariane was shown on cam less that he was. I would much rather see Ariane all by herself.
Phil, you are now the president of JREF, it’s time for a little professional public behavior– all the time, everywhere.
BTW, Brian Cox really is rather cute.

Brian is awesome. The man can take some of the most complex topics about the Universe and physics and break them down to a level that is easy to understand by most people, without turning the explanation into boring drivel.
Which happens to also be one of the reasons I like hanging out on your Blog, Phil, you manage to pull that off too … well, you know, from time-to-time.

Definite man crush. The guy is my age and still looks like he is in his mid twenties. Totally hating on him….Looks like I shall have to read his book.

He was very articulate and charming on Robert Llewellyn’s “Car Pool”. Which, incidentally, would be a nice place to see you too, Phil.

Tell Colbert to sod off, and go on Stewart’s show instead!

I enjoyed the Colbert interview. I keep asking this question: “Why is it so difficult to understand E=mc2? Any country boy who has cut firewood understands it, but may not know why. A piece of cedar that is one cubic foot is harder to lift than a piece of oak that is one cubic foot. No problem, it is gravity, because on the moon it is easier to lift the cedar than the oak on Earth. But if either piece goes in the EarthStove, the country boy realizes that the oak more time to burn and produces more heat (ENERGY) than the cedar. His conclusion is, “Cut more oak.” because there is more heat (energy) in the oak (that has more mass) and it may even take exactly the same about of time to cut oak as cedar, which give him more time to court the girls.

i highly recommend any of you who have facebook to search god particle and join the group I will not die to “god particle”. Perhaps add to the discussion.

Brian Cox is a fine English lad, I never knew that he was in the band that performed Labours election anthem ‘Things can only get better’ (they say hindsight is 20/20 lolz) – and there is no way he is 41! I saw him in a SciDoc about the LHC a while ago (before it played the warranty card). Good luck to him.

Just saw it and Brian was great, as was Colbert. Just added his book to my Amazon Wishlist (Don’t worry “Death…” is there too!)

Danish / Germanic-y word with a cross in the ‘o’? Why?

Yup. Brian Cox is awesome.

I Agree, on the one hand, that for a serious interview, Jon Stewart would be better but for a really fun, on the other hand, chance to get in some digs at far right or far lefties, Stephen Colbert and his Faux conservatism is a good bet. I guess it just depends on how many words you want to squeeze in. Colbert is, after all, the STAR of his show and he has a very aggressive patter. On the other, other hand, Colbert may actually have more fans than Jon so,,,more coverage???
