Today IS a good day to MMORPG

I’m not much of an online game player, but I may have to rethink that stance:

Mwuhahahaha. That looks like fun! Now I just have to slow the Earth’s rotation to give me more time per day to play. Where’s Q when you need him?

Tip o’ the targ to SciFiWire.

There is an open beta in (I think) early to mid January, so you could always give it a try for free.

Warbird?!? Warbirds are Romulan ships. Klingons have Battlecruisers. God, I hate it when people get Romulans and Klingons mixed up.

I guess this is like when they got mixed up and started giving Klingons “birds of prey,” which was also originally a Romulan ship.

“Now I just have to slow the Earth’s rotation…”

Oh Phil Phil Phil. :) Your saying that made me giggle almost hysterically, because one of the “TV Weather People” here said almost te same thing years ago about the Leonid meteors.

She said (on the air) “the peak is supposed to be over Europe and Africa, but we can speed up the Earth’s rotation so we can see the peak here.”

Seriously. She said in on air. So you wanting to slow down the rotation made me laugh (plus I read an old XKCD about it last night).

I am so looking forward to STO. You should check on the website and read the “Path to…” section which covers the gap between Star Trek Nemesis and the game. The game takes place in the “Prime” Star Trek Continuity (i.e. the one unaltered by the latest movie).

Don’t know how much of a geek you REALLY are Phil, but you could give Lord of the Rings Online a try, I’m very much enjoying it.

That’s some truly excremental voice acting. I thought it was a fanfic at first.

Atari as most people know it went out of business long ago. The current company named “Atari” is actually Infogrames, shovelware developers extraordinare, who bought out the rights to the Atari name and logo long ago. (They don’t even own any Atari game IP – that’s all owned by Hasbro.)

#9 “The game takes place in the “Prime” Star Trek Continuity (i.e. the one unaltered by the latest movie).”

That explains the DS9/Voyager-style uniforms — but doesn’t explain the movie-style Constitution-class starship.

Always be wary of a game trailer that focuses more on pre-rendered cinematics than showing actual gameplay. There’s very little gameplay in that trailer, and what there is is made up of extraordinarily short shots (not even displaying the interface).

Be wary I say! WARY! Usually means they’re not confident enough to show actual gameplay.

  27. 27.   Utakata Says:

    @ 17, fluffy…

Thanks for bringing to light the current nature of Atari – that is, that they are not the same game console devloper that some grew up to know and love. It may also explain why *Cryptic’s current released MMO, Champions Online was pushed out stumbling with very little polish, because Atari may just wanted a fast return. This concerns me greatly about the quality and integrity of STO. So don’t expect any of the magic Blizz puts out when that game goes live.

*Note: Cryptic Studio is STO’s current developers; Atari is Cryptic’s backers…I hope that makes sense.

If you want to play a really good scifi game that pretty much own all other scifi then buy Mass Effect to Xbox360 or PC (its a “classic” game so its quite cheap). The game is created by the RPG-gods BioWare (Baldurs Gate, KOTOR etc) so the game has a very very good story, excellent voice acting (no dialogues to read) and awesome action ( = with Gear of War etc, some problems with poor fram rate tough). The best thing is that Mass Effect has alot of SCIENCE in the science-fiction compare to Star Trek etc which has alot of fiction but not so much science.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_effect

The sequel Mass Effect 2 will be released 2001-01-28 so hurry up!

Phil, you also might like Infinity: The Quest for Earth (www.infinity-universe.com), an independent game still very much under construction, which will take place in a procedurally generated galaxy with realistic scales! I can’t wait to see if and when it’ll be released…

Ummmmm… meh. I can’t generate much interest in this game. To quote another blog I read, the purpose of STO seems to be “To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and kill them.”
The RPG aspect of it (according to the rather poorly designed official site) seems a tad over complicated to me. And the MMO aspect isn’t going to do what I wanted it to do: I wanted to be a part of the crew of a starship. A crew of other people. Maybe get to command from time to time. No such luck here.
I am trying to wean myself off of World of Warcrack. But I don’t think this is gonna do it. Maybe The Old Republic will. :)

Sure, it sounds fun now, Phil. But just wait until you’ve gotten your 10,000th “Collect/Kill X of X, and return to me for a quest reward!”

MMO’s should be studied by psychologists for their astonishing ability to get people to do exactly the same things over and over again just by varying the graphics slightly.

Oh, come now, Geri — has it really been so long that you’ve forgotten the Klingon Bird of Prey from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock?

(Admittedly, this was originally intended to be a ROMULAN Bird of Prey — a late script change substituted the Klingons for the Romulans, and they were stuck with the Bird-of-Prey spacecraft model and a plot that called for a cloaking device.)
