On a Good Dog (Ogden Nash)

O, my little pup ten years ago
was arrogant and spry,
Her backbone was a bended bow
for arrows in her eye.
Her step was proud, her bark was loud,
her nose was in the sky,
But she was ten years younger then,
And so, by God, was I.

Small birds on stilts along the beach
rose up with piping cry.
And as they rose beyond her reach
I thought to see her fly.
If natural law refused her wings,
that law she would defy,
for she could do unheard-of things,
and so, at times, could I.

Ten years ago she split the air
to seize what she could spy;
Tonight she bumps against a chair,
betrayed by milky eye!
She seems to pant, Time up, time up!
My little dog must die,
And lie in dust with Hector's pup;
So, presently, must I.

Yes, my dog can fly too - especially when chasing a patch of torch light down the hallway and into the sunken lounge at high velocity! ;-)

I also know a dog (a staffy) that can - or used to anyway - climb trees to retrieve a stick ... ;-)

Plus a kelpie that flies into the water at the beach after a ball .. ;-)

@ 7. DCB Says:

With a little more practice, I bet that dog could go Pro(cyon)!

Great one - LOL. :-)

My last dog was a staffy that I named Sirius Dogstar. My current one (a lil' champion of a Jack Russell cross Fox terrier) I didn't get to name otherwise I'd have called it something astronomical related too.

(BTW. Our family's old dog which I did get to name was called Tycho after Tycho Brahe.)

My cat is named Zosma (See : http://stars.astro.illinois.edu/sow/zosma.html ) after Delta Leonis - mainly because Regulus, Denebola & Algieba didn't quite suit this female cat.

If I was in charge of the IAU & could change just *one* thing then I'd restore Pluto to full planethood along with Eris, Ceres, Sedna, etc .. But if I change *two* things I'd bring back the constellation of Felis as well! ;-)

Weird that there are four dogs (Canis Major, Canis Minor & "the hunting dogs" Canes Venatici) in the sky but no cats. Okay, there's a lion, a minor lion and a lynx but they're not quite the same are they?

And I thought Phil was the Doctor, not Superman?
Something very strange is afoot here...

I'll wait for the discussion on Richard Wiseman's blog before deciding whether this is an unintentional illusion, a photographic/shoppic trick, or whether your dog can actually fly (hmpf!).

Also have a pup that's a mix of something I can't remember. Doesn't fly, but she rolls.

Instead of throwing the snowballs into the air we used to throw them into snowbanks. Our poor German Shepard, the excitement of the chase followed by complete perplexity when she couldn't find the "ball" made us laugh and laugh and laugh.

I think it was our payback for all the dog slobbered tennis balls dropped into our laps in the summer time!
