I liked the original. It had just the right amount of humour to offset the (mild) horror aspect of the film. This was one of the last vampire films made where the vampire character had no redeeming features, which is how vampires are supposed to be – nasty and appropriately demonic, rather than foppish, gothic and complaining about the boring bloody diet and the sunburn.

The special effects were well done and not over-used. Lovely moments were the POV shot of vampire over the alleyway, the transformation from wolf to dying teenager, and the climactic bat scenes.

It has been argued that Chris Sarandon was under-used but you don’t want too much villain – you want the villain to creep up here and there and be frightening and memorable, not omnipresent to the point of boredom. I think he was very effective in his scenes. Compare Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs: He wasn’t on for long, but by Crikey he was memorable!

If they can keep to that spirit it should work well… However, maybe it’s just me, but I have this feeling the remake will be camped-up and heavier on the comedy, thus ruining the feel and the tension.

Hopefully any actors who play the younger characters won’t end up the way some of those from the original version did. Maybe the Tardis will whisk them away before anything untoward ensues.

I heard clips from Tennant’s “Much Ado” performance on Audible; he certainly can bring the Benedick… hearing him say “well, you are a rare parrot-teacher” in a Scots burr with all those rolled Rs just makes me appreciate him even more!
As for remaking other Roddy McDowall films with Tennant… this could be the chance to remake “The Black Hole” and do it right!

Rewatched “Fright Night” recently, and I think it holds up. Its nice to see a more old fashioned Vamp. Nary a glitter to be seen… plus, as referenced in the post title… Evil Ed! “Don’t call me Evil ANY MORE!” Priceless! And I still say “oh, you’re so COOL, Brewster!!”

“I’ve seen the Future and its a remake!” That’s what it means!

It means unending confusion that is constantly increasing as when asked what movies we’ve seen we’ll have to say the same title only X times and version 2001, 2010, 2013, 2015, etc … and undending deja vu.

Colin Farrell playing Jerry pretty much ruins the entire idea for me. It just doesn’t make any sense and probably couldn’t be saved by anyone at this point.

I’m sure Lars and the Real Girl terrified the hell out of you because it featured, heaven forbid, people learning to heal themselves through creativity and irrational behavior (like people in the real world who can’t afford $100 an hour shrinks and have to solve their own problems.)

Coincidentally, I watched Fright Night for the first time in 20 years last night. Other than Chris Sarandon being a fairly charming vampire (or maybe I just like because he’s Prince Humperdinck) it’s a pretty poor movie. I don’t suppose the remake could be much worse.

Why are good vampire movies so rare?

Lars and the Real Girl was a quirky clever likable movie…but I used to live in the area where it was filmed, and under different circumstances I might have been Lars–my sister was killing herself laughing saying “You do that!” (not the doll thing, fwiw).

So maybe the new Fright Night will be clever and quirky as well. It was a pretty good movie the first time round…be interesting to see what they can do with it this time.

I LOVED Lars and the Real Girl. I have had many friends watch it and they all loved it. It was a sweet quirky movie. Oh well Phil, I will give you a pass on this one.

2) David Tennant’s character is not going to mirror the Roddy McDowell role – it’s going to be more of a big stage magician, Cris Angel-type character.
