Marian Call in Boulder July 3-4!

By Phil Plait | June 15, 2010 12:10 pm

mariancall_gardenofthegodsI’ve written about Marian Call before: the fiery-haired songstress who croons her cleverly-written songs about Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and being a geek.

Marian is currently on a tour of all 50 states, and on July 3rd and 4th she’ll be right here in Boulder! On the 3rd she’s performing at the Trident coffeeshop (940 Pearl Street) from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. If you live in the area, and you’re a geek — face it, you are — then you should come. She’s set up a Facebook page to get an idea of how many people will attend. The next day — July 4 — she’ll be at the Folsom St. Coffee Shop (1795 Folsom St) at 5:00pm. Both concerts are free, but you should chip in a few bucks if you go to support her!

After Boulder, she’s heading down Colorado Springs (check her schedule at the link above), so if you’re in Boulder you should see her while you can.

You can get samples of her music on her page; her music is quirky and fun and personal (here’s a review from a newcomer to her music, a woman who heard Marian for the first time recently on this tour). To give you a better sense of what she’s about, check out this fan-made video featuring her music and scenes from Firefly. It’s really good:

I’ve already made my reservation at Trident. The venue is intimate, so better hurry up and get counted! I hope to see lots of other BABloggees there.

    Not bad. She sounds a bit like Nellie McKay to me.

    Facebook is for geeks?

    Not quite.

  3. I had never heard of her until you posted this but she sounds great :)

    Ah, Firefly. I’ve just seen the series (and the movie) recently, and (apart from the movie which was kind of bad) it was awesome! Too bad that it was canceled (I am right with Sheldon Cooper on that one!).

    The scenes fit well to the music. Very melodramatic, really well done!

    P.S.: I’ve heard somebody speaking of geeks…. ūüėČ

    “Marian is currently on a tour of all 50 states…”

    I’ll just wait until she arrives in California.

    Great, now thanks to you, I want to watch Firefly for the nth time.

    I have to say, the song fits really well with the overall theme of Firefly. If this song was out, I have no doubts it would’ve been on the Serenity soundtrack.

    @DrFlimmer 4:

    Lies. The movie was awesome. I always shed a tear, though, when Wash dies.

  7. Of course you tell people after you make your reservation.

    And now I can’t get to the site at all. Are we unintentionally hitting her with a denial of service?

  9. Sarah

    Aw. She was here in Saint Paul _last month_ and I missed it. I’ll watch for the next tour.

    Aww I thought that said “Martian Call”.

    Beautiful song sung by a beautiful singer, great series. :-)

    Unfortunately, given I’m on a different continent I can’t be there – sounds great. I’ll have to see if I can pick her CD up from somewhere though!

    Much preferred Inara to Anna, Morena Baccarin wise! ūüėČ

    ( She plays well acting as both characters though.)

    @10. Rory Kent Says:

    Aww I thought that said ‚ÄúMartian Call‚ÄĚ.

    I’d far rather have Marian (or Morena!) call me than a martian – especially of the H.g> Well’s variety. ūüėČ

    Great song bird. Anticipating her arrival here in Georgia.

    You should insist that your close personal friend Adam Savage (TM) and mancrush Wil Wheaton invite Marian to perform as SDCC w00tstock 2.4.
    I hear that she will be in town.

    I thought “Marian Call” was something to do with Catholicism and so I was expecting an anti-woo post. Instead I get a female singer-songwriter. Won’t get fooled again.

    @ Allan 6

    When Wash dies, I just get angry. His death was gratuitous and did nothing to advance the plot. Book’s death actually meant something.

    And Marian will be in Atlanta in September, but her schedule doesn’t say where.

    Loved it. She’s great. A wonderful synergy of vocals, instruments, and Firefly clips (a personal favorite sci-fi). Dare I say, I thought it a stellar performance. Enjoy yourselves, Phil and company.
