Announcement: I'll be at w00tstock, baby!

By Phil Plait | June 28, 2010 7:30 am

I extremely nerded out and pleased and squeeified to announce that I’ll be at w00tstock! At Comic Con. On stage.

I know.

w00tstockw00tstock, for those helplessly normal of you out there, is the premier nerd event in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. Hosted by singers Paul and Storm, Mythbuster and My Close Personal Friend Adam Savage™, and my long-standing and partially-requited nerdcrush Wil Wheaton, w00tstock is billed as "Three hours of geeks and music", which is apt enough. Everyone I know who has gone has raved about it.

And cripes, the talent they get. Bill Corbett, Mike Nelson, and Kevin Murphy from Rifftrax, née Mystery Science Theater 3000. Chris Hardwick, aka The Nerdist. Len Peralta, about whom you’ll be hearing more on this blog pretty shortly. And oh my FSM, I’m really thrilled that my favorite fire-haired songstress Marian Call will be there as well. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who sent a note to TPTB to get her on stage.

One cool thing about w00tstock is that all the stuff done on stage is Creative Commons licensed, so it goes up immediately on Flickr and YouTube. In fact, there are a lot of videos from previous versions online you can check out. If you’re a bona fide nerd you’ll enjoy them.

To say I’m excited and honored is like saying a gamma-ray burst is kinda bright, or a neutron star is somewhat dense, or a Planck length is a tad minuscule.

I’m that excited.

And of course initially panicked over a topic. But then Mrs. BA inspired me, and suddenly, full blown like Minerva from the brow of Jupiter, an idea burst forth from my brain. So now all I have to do is put it together and keep it to ten minutes. Good thing I’m not long-winded.

Anyway, you can get tickets for this, but you’d better hurry because Comic Con is Geek Central and I’m sure they’ll sell out this week.

And as if that’s not enough, I’ll have even more Comic Con news soon. Mwuhahahaha!

Really? How do you know that the Pleiadeans don’t have a better event? Are you holding back on us?

    HA! Ha.

I know it’s terribly pedantic; however, I feel compelled to point out that since the Beatles didn’t play at Woodstock, a different album should have been referenced. Perhaps Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young?

Now that the killjoy has spoken, this sounds unbelievably cool and hope to make it to one of these events someday.

Also, speaking of Wil, does anyone know when Season 4 of The Guild is slated to begin? Sure I could Google it and find out for myself, but I prefer going the slow route.

All of this stuff seems to happen out on the coasts, usually the west one, or in Las Vegas, or someplace else far and away. Sigh.

So, now that I know what wootstock is, I am considered abnormal?

Is this going to be in the DSM-V among the diagnostic criteria?

I was normal and I didn’t even know it. Gosh. I feel as if I have wasted so much of my life being normal.

Now I REALLY hate not being able to go.

Theron @5: Not entirely. They’ve played both Chicago and Minneapolis recently. And if you can convince them that a certain threshold of tickets will be sold (I think it’s 300), they will come to your town, too.

  8. Richard

I bought my tickets as soon as they went on sale. I expect this to be one of the highlights of Comic-Con.

  9. Is it a bad sign that I recognized the pixelated images of Adam Savage and Wil Wheaton, before reading the text?

Perhaps Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young?

Even better would be Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith.

  10. I was at the Chicago w00tstock last month, it was unreal awesome with fall out of your chair nerd funny. And 3 hours is a bit misleading. It was 4:45 and 5:30 if you include the autograph line. I highly recommend to anyone who is in the SD area/comic con.

We’re just way too awesome. :-)

Is it a bad sign that I recognized the pixelated images

Our brains are wired for face recognition. That why even crude smileys work. :-] And why we can see faces everywhere.

Ken B beat me to it… I was surprised that I recognized Adam Savage in that image, before I scrolled down to read his name. I’ve seen the Wil Wheaton one many times before, so recognizing it was no surprise. I actually don’t think I’d have got that one if I wasn’t already familiar with it. But the Savage one somehow captures him.

  13. “squeeified”? Is that a Sheldon reference?

  14. Charles

Paul and Storm are awesome. You should see if they’ll write a song based on Death From the Skies!

  15. When they asked me to participate in the Minneapolis W00tstock, I mentioned that I knew a friend of Adam Savage’s – Phil Plait. Paul (of Paul and Storm) replied – EVERYONE knows Phil Plait – he’s the Kevin Bacon of nerdom!

So the Comic-Con W00tstock will be zero degrees of separation!

Kudos – you’ll have a blast and the best audience you can imagine.

@GeorgeHrab beat Paul and Storm to the Death from the Skies song. Hear @GeorgeHrab’s Trebuchet at Geologic Podcast, Skepticality Podcast. Podblack Podcast. Contains “These are the ways we will die” with Guest appearance from @BadAstronomer. Yaayy

Hey, if you can drive there in less than three days, it’s not that far away. Even the East Coast events never get closer than about 2500 miles to where I live.

  18. Ah, but Jim (16), we’ve met before, so you’re already at a Plait Number of 1.

And everyone says you’re a tough act to follow. Wil loved your performance! SO no pressure on me or anything…

  19. oh for reals? i totally missed this annoucment, i’ve been in a flurry of weddings and business trips lately, my feet haven’t touched the ground. I’m super excited that i’ll be seeing you on stage. got my tickets within 5 minutes of release :)
