fakescience_nasaIf you haven’t heard about the site Fake Science, then go there now. They/he/she post(s) retro posters with great drawings and well, fake science adages on them. The one shown here is from Thursday, and is typical. It’s really funny, and I always look forward to the next one!

I like the one about Pimples being an evolutionary adaptation to prevent teenage boys from reproducing.

Back in the 1980′s I came across a supermarket tabloid with a headline that screamed, “SCIENTISTS PLAN TO BLOW UP THE MOON”.

It struck me so funny that it I actually bought it. (I still have it, stored in a box somewhere). It was doubly funny because I remember distinctly how it caught the eyes of customers, a phenomenon I had never seen before. Come to think of it, I do not ever recall seeing anyone buy ANY tabloids, before or since…which makes me wonder why they are there.

I always knew my brain hurt when I heard ‘news’ about a ‘celebrity’. Now I know why thanks to Fake Science.

  4. Love it–especially the tagline: “For when facts are too confusing.”

Gee I did’nt know NASA had made a Death Star. I some times glance at the supermarket tabloids while I’M wating in line, I think I saw that one about SCIENTISTS PLAN TO BLOW UP THE MOON hears another one B17 BOMBER FOUND ON THE MOON and this one of my favorite NEAL ARMSTRONG IS FORM THE MOON the story is that Apollo 11 had only 3 crewmen Buzz Alderen, and Michael Collons when Buzz landed , he opened the hacth and Neil Armstrong climed in and NASA covered the hole thing up by saying Armstrong was on the mission (I have one question if this is true then who was on a Gemini flight that Armstrong was on before Apollo 11 . I rember in one episode of The Six Millon Dollar Man a scientist trying to mine a mineral from the moon causes the moon to go into a diferent orbit causing natural disastars on Earth . P.S. my all time favorite tabloid story: MANEATING MUTENT RABITS LOOSE IN CANADIA.

    @Anchor:

I saw a tabloid have a similar effect once. Except it was not about scientists planning to blow up the moon. It was, instead, about scientists discovering a crashed space craft with two gay alien skeletons trapped inside in a loving embrace. How, precisely, scientists were able to determine the gender of the aliens to know that they were gay simply from the skeletal remains without actually knowing anything about alien reproduction, I do not know…but I do know it drew a _lot_ of attention from passing customers.

Magnets have “pieces of gravity” inside? Who knew!?!

I like the planets one – it includes Pluto and makes Saturn a “Hot Jupiter”! ;-)

I also love the “How the Dinosaurs Died” one which I’ve gotta say makes far more sense than the Creationists “explanation” for it :-P

But my fave out of all of those is the one that tells us how to “reverse the polarity” to avoid static shocks on carpets! :-D

  9. Just spent a good 20 minutes of work time laughing. Hilarious! I’ll have to check back often. I’m scared of finding one that I actually thought was true though.

  10. Clouds come from smoke stacks on the Sun. HAHA!

I am seriously considering printing out a few of these and posting them in my classroom. These are great.

Speaking of blowing up the moon and seasonal changes, here’s a blast from past, a Usenet celeb (or kook if you prefer)

@Jearley, I am not a teacher, but I was thinking that if I were one, I would do the exact same thing. Talk about the discussion points you can have. A great way to work on critical / reasoning skills – and get a good laugh!

This reminds me of Science Made Stupid, which was on permanent display in the university’s geology library.

Heh, I am following this blog with my tumblr account. I emailed the creator about how otters and beavers are reverse mammals and the need to submerge every so ofter in order to get a breath of water. (Like how dolphins need to surface for air) I received a reply back saying I stumbled into a great scientific secret. Beavers make dams, and what is in those dams? Water…all the water they will ever need to breath.

    I was amused :-)

What? Tabloid science and no mention of Bat Boy? Remember…..he sheds his wings every three years, and regenerates a new pair!
