I remember watching the episode where containers landed on the moon and released an air environment that allowed them to go outside without space suits. The commander was talking to one lady about what they missed on earth and a dubbed voice mention race riots and the KKK. I almost fell out of my chair. I have always wondered what he really missed before the over dub.

I never got to watch much of it as a kid, and a few years ago I tried to watch the DVDs... but whooooaa... Sigh. Sadly, I'm with Tracer on this one.

The remake of The Time Machine that came out several years ago shows a lunar calamity quite convincingly, although the Moon is broken up, not leaving orbit. Even then, the parts just sort of hang together. Originally, only part of the Moon was supposed to be blasted away, leaving Moonbase Alpha stranded on an asteroid. But I guess they thought using the whole Moon would be more [visually] interesting. To be fair, despite the obvious flaw in physics, I think they were right. WSD wasn't a problem for me because it all looked so damn cool, and we really ought to have been going back to the Moon anyway. So sad we never did, but in 1975 it seemed as if there was still a chance.

There is a truly terrible movie in which Hercules (played by Lou Ferrigno) battles Science in the person of an evil scientist. At one point the scientist puts the Moon on a collision path with Earth, and Hercules changes into King Kong to deflect it. :-(

Tracer wrote: <i>"An explosion of a nuclear stockpile on the moon’s surface throws the ENTIRE MOON not only out of Earth orbit, but out of the Solar system entirely?"</i>

Yes, that premise required a generous helping of WSD (willing suspension of disbelief.) It's just lucky for our side that the waste dump was on the <b><i>near</i></b> side of the Moon.

I would put those productions on a par with the “Quatermass” serials, possibly due to the fact that one of the collaborators was a certain Fred Hoyle."</i>

It's good to know those are serials. In addition to being a good scientist*, Hoyle (with help) wrote some good novels. I've always been partial to <i>Ossian's Ride</i> with its blend of SF and mystery.

Whilst browsing through a London branch of HMV a week ago, I was pleased and surprised to come across a DVD of the 1960s serial(s) "A For Andromeda" and its sequel "Andromeda Breakthrough", which I had thought long gone.

I would put those productions on a par with the "Quatermass" serials, possibly due to the fact that one of the collaborators was a certain Fred Hoyle.

The serials begin - I hope I am not spoiling anyone's future enjoyment with the detection of a signal from outer space, and then continues with the release into the oceans of genetically engineered organisms designed to absorb the oxygen from the atmosphere.

I have had second-hand paperback versions of the two serials, written by Fred Hoyle and Stephen Eliott, for some time. It will be fascinating to see how they compare with the orginal.

I once came across a review of one of the two serials , in an American magazine, so they presumably reached America at some point.

As the BIS motto has it "From imagination to reality" - except possibly the part about the oxygen loss.

Damn, I wished I could take part in this, but I am not living in the US :(
I loved Space1999, mostly for the awesome design and the eagles most of all ;)
Also loved the claustrophobic feeling on the station. The stories were unfortunately pretty weird at times, but it was still a rather good show. I also liked UFO (or "Commando SHADO"), also by Gerry Anderson. He always had cool designs for vehicles, stations, etc.

Love that Space 1899 vid!

We used to build Eagles on the peaks of little sand dunes where we engaged in space battles. No inertial dampeners. And my kid heart would always skip a beat whenever Maya came on the screen.

The absurdities that tracer describes are what made the show unwatchable for me at 14, when it first came out. I was much less tollerant of goofy science back then. Nowadays I love this stuff. Similarly I thuoght the oriinal Battlestar Galactica cheesy junk at the time but now love it. Then again, I hate hte new Battlestar - grim, depressig stuff. And teh new Dr Who is just a noisy soap opera. (But I loved Patrick Troughton's doctor and still do) Possibly in another 30 years I'll like those shows and hate whatever total immersion vr is current...

Drat those pesky mailing rules. I wanted to grow up and morph into Maya.
Did anyone else ever wonder why they didn't make a doomsday film about what happened to the Earth after the moon ejection?
Who let that reality in the room? Quick, close the door! Oops I mean hatch!

Although this is not of "great interest" I know how the people of Quebec feel as they are excluded from most Canada wide contests because of their "gaming" laws. OTOH, I and many more Canadians inundated Discovery.ca to carry your new show. Next foe - A&E?

This show Horrified me! Remember the tentacled furnace beast that nabbed people and ejected their char-coaled remains! I hope I can win this so I may scar my kids psyches as well. Cheers!

I liked this TV series in my youth, but I'm afraid I'd just cringe watching it now.

An explosion of a nuclear stockpile on the moon's surface throws the ENTIRE MOON not only out of Earth orbit, but out of the Solar system entirely? At a speed that causes it to pass through a NEW STAR SYSTEM every week? (Even if we assume that's due to the time dilation experienced by Moonbase Alpha's inhabitants, that would still require 99.999% of the speed of light, and that's assuming this week's star system is only 4 light-years away from last week's.) And yet they're able to hang out in that new star system for a while, shoot the bull, meet the local inhabitants, play around with the star system's space monsters, etc., while the moon is zipping through the star system at that speed?

It's a sad day when you have to say that the premise of _Lost In Space_ was more believable....

The Eagles always had those distinctive pods over the landing gear.

The one thing (that I remember--it was a long time ago!) that clunked a little about the series. They always used those Argos for lunar excursions. It just didn't seem, well, spacey and futuristic enough, you know?
