Awesome: You piqued my interest... quick visit to the wiki page for Haleakala shows that in Hawaiian folklore, they figured the grandmother of the demigod Maui lived at the summit. And apparently she helped Maui capture the sun so it could be slowed down (to lenghten the day). Hmm - does seem to further support your post ;) @3 Cmdr. Awesome:

As a scientist you are expected to acknowledge it's always sunrise and sunset somewhere on earth, so saying "Goodnight, Earth" makes no temporal or contextual sense unless you are an evil scientist sending it at a spiral into the sun :-) It’s really “Goodnight, Bolivia”.
