Talk at Ohio State University April 28

By Phil Plait | April 27, 2011 12:11 pm

On Thursday, April 28th at 8:30 p.m. I’ll be at Ohio State University to give my "Death from the Skies!" talk, because I love scaring undergrads but never had the desire to actually become a professor.

The talk is sponsored by the OSU Students for Freethought and was organized by my old pal Ashley Paramore (yes, that Ashley Paramore). They’ve set up a Facebook page for the event with more info, and a page where you can get front row tickets (the talk is free, but they have a handful of reserved seats up front they’re selling) and also get tickets for a fund-raising dinner for the group.

This will be a lot of fun! Of course, as a University of Michigan graduate, I suppose showing my face at Ohio State University is pretty bold, but then I only cared about U of M football because it meant traffic was light in Ann Arbor and I could get to the farmer’s market more easily on Saturdays. Hopefully that’ll keep the OSU pitchforks and torches at bay.

    Nice :D

I’ll be there… as a Buckeye alum, I welcome our Big 10 brethren. If you were from USC or Florida… maybe not so much ;)

  3. Excuse me, its proper name is “THE Ohio State University”.

    GOSH.

  4. Caterina

I wonder if they’ll let us lowly staffers in. I’ve seen the flyers all over the department and keep going squee when I see them.

Dang…I wish I would have had a little more notice. Oh well…Have fun, and start with a big ole O-H to diffuse the scUM connection and you’ll be fine. GO BUCKS!

Oh, by the way, I also posted this on the /r/columbus reddit page….hope it helps!

  7. Chris

fyi, there’s no admission or BuckID requirement for gen ad; there’s a 10$ for guaranteed 1st/2nd row tickets, but it’s not required

  8. Consargn it! I’m frequently in Columbus, but never during the week, and not this weekend anyway.

Oh well. Say “Hi” to Jen from Skepchic.org. She’s a denizen of the area.

Hmph, Phil – I have to say, “Professor Plait” has a nice ring to it :D
And IMHO, the best professors are those that can transmit the passion and excitement that they feel about the subject matter to those they supervise and teach, and you’re obviously damn good at that…

  10. Matt

I never realized that you were a UM alum…Go Blue!

@jtradke – how did I know that someone would mention that?

  11. The Astronomical Society group at OSU is helping to organize it too! ^_^

  12. Andy

    I’ll be there!

  13. Mike from Atlanta

    Go Blue!

We can only hope Phil will grant equal time and appear at Michigan. The universe must balance.

…gaaah…a prior engagement of great seriousness prevents me from groveling at the feet of His Royal Majesty, Wizard of Time and Space…wish I could be there…give ‘UM hell, ol’ boy…

  15. Chris from Maui

Uhhh…. not to be “picky” (but someone at Ohio State obviously is)….. every time a Ohio State football player says the name of their school it’s not “Ohio State University”….. it’s “THE Ohio State University” …. THE is at the top of the Logo on OSU’s home page. (I always thought it was rather ridiculous)

  16. It is indeed THE Ohio State University. Get it right. Sheesh. =P

I’m looking forward to your talk!

  17. Tim

That’s great, Phil, but as a PSU graduate, I couldn’t possibly show my face or Nittany Lion pride at OSU. Not to mention it’s a long drive from Philadelphia.

Come to PSU or even Drexel! I would love to hear you.

  18. Great. And I’ll be stuck in a lecture about database management instead of going a few miles down the road to catch your talk. Schedule FAIL…

  19. Sean

Funny, I only cared about U of M football because the traffic was so heavy I could barely make it to my lab. Guess you didn’t live a block away from the stadium. ;-)

Wish I could make it down this weekend, but even of I could I’d probably get lost looking for TOSU.

Ohio State sites say the talk is at 7:00. This post, the Meetups that invited me, and the Facebook page say 8:30. When is it really?
