Cubes all the way down

By Phil Plait | June 8, 2011 10:06 am

I love Cyriak Harris. His animations are amazing, and funny, and weird, and frequently distressing, and make my brain hurt.

This one is no exception:

So cool. Cyriak’s a flippin’ genius and we should be throwing accolades and money and little pickles at him.

Tip o’ the Power of Ten to Boing Boing and JHGRedekop.

  1. Well, that’s definitely, ummm, “different”. :-)

Anyone else notice the optical illusion on the closing credit? (It looks like it’s shrinking, but it’s not.)

    @Ken B

Is that because during the whole video everything was moving toward the viewer, so when something appears that is still, it appears to be moving away?

  3. Archwright

Man, if the whole universe is rendered using voxels, the system it’s running on must have an awesome processor.

  4. I’m having some kind of weird visceral reaction to this stuff. I can’t decide whether I like it or hate it.

  5. sjc345

I’ll certainly throw little pickles at him. Because it’s going to be a while before I can eat again…

  6. Pete Jackson

Ooooh my brain hurts… Time for some soothing chocolate chip cookies.

  7. Marc

This guy must have been playing way too much minecraft.

  8. Sam

    It’s Minecraft !

  9. Daffy

Very cool. By coincidence, I just finished watching “Real Genius” on VH1—the “little pickle” line is hilarious.

  10. Carey

I definitely saw some Minecraft in there.

  11. Theramansi

I can’t help but think that this would be something that M.C.Escher would have done, if he could have make a video. :p

  12. JHGRedekop

Cyriak’s also done videos touching on skeptical subjects, such as cattle mutilation

  13. Dennis

    That was very cool.
Not sure why he deserves to have pickles thrown at him, but it sounds like fun.
    Where do I sign up?

  14. Creeper

That’s a nice planet you have there.

    SSSssssSSssSSsSSSSSSsSSsssssssssssss…

  15. stan9fromouterspace

    It’s full of cubes!

  16. Caleb

    Minecraft + Inception?

  17. Thomas Siefert

My god, it’s full of cubes…

  18. Messier Tidy Upper

    LOL. Neat clip. :-)

Interesting use of the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field – although I guess you could describe it as just a bit “square.” ;-)

  19. MaDeR

Inception was already done in other little gem from Cyriak:

At times I thought I was seeing a 3-D rendering of SimCity. This one isn’t my favorite Cyriak project, but it was definitely interesting. It’s been entertaining to watch his skills progress. Yes, I’ve spent way too much time browsing his archives. Just wish the search feature on his site worked better…

    sierpinski-an universe

Neat effect: after watch things expand in that video, I scrolled down to the image of the globular cluster, and it appeared to be shrinking.

BTW, have you seen this cartoon? Sort of an Iwo Jima (or Iwu Jamma, if you’re Michele Bachmann) of science. http://www.ucsusa.org/publications/pulse/cartoon-June-2011.html

  23. Mount

This guy’s definitely been drinking the Minecraft Kool-Aid. There’s crack in it.

  24. Grand Lunar

Is this what would happen if the entire universe was Borgified?
