Universo Implacável

By Phil Plait | August 14, 2011 12:20 pm

I just got word that my three-part science TV show, "Bad Universe", will be airing in Brazil soon! I can’t embed it here, but they have a promo video up at that link.

I had no idea I could speak Portuguese.

Actually, for the dubbing, they did get someone who sounded a lot like me (and used me own voice as well, like when I said "Whoa!"). Anyway, this is cool news, especially since it’ll be airing in the UK very soon too. I don’t know when exactly it’ll air in Brazil, so if you live there keep your eyes on the DiscoveryBrasil site.

Tip o’ the Brazil nut to Carlos Cardoso.

The US, the UK, now Brazil. Tomorrow . . . the World!

I see your evil plan for what it is, Phil. All I can say is . . . make sure you’ve checked out the evil overlord’s list of “do”s and “don’t”s.

  2. That’s very cool!

Just ordered the DVD set… wish there was more than just 3 episodes, though!

  3. Sili

    You made a TV show?

  4. ThiGimenes

    Great news!

I’m a huge fan of your work and so glad that more folks here in Brazil will have the opportunity to know you too.

And it was really awesome to read a tittle of a post in the blog in plain portuguese (have to confess that it twisted my mind for a few seconds)

Congratulations Phil! And thanks for inspiring us to think about the universe.

  5. Dr. Morbius

Hmm … that translates to “Implacable Universe”. Oooook.

  6. JonF

Am I the only one who is, above all else, wondering what “Holy Haleakala” will translate to in Portuguese?

  7. MacRat

When will the full episodes be available online?

  8. RalphP

I learned about you and your site from two series on Discovery channel:

How Universe Works and “Bad universe” (translated to “Dangers from space”)

Greetings from Poland, you are known there as well! :)

  9. Wow! I’m brazillian and had no idea the show would air here! Awesome!

  10. Christopher

JonF eat me too it! I want to here the portugese explanation of something before Holy Haleakala!” from Dr. P.

  11. Steve Ulven

I really dug the show. Is there a possibility of you doing more? I’d love to see this as a series. It works well side-by-side with Mythbusters.

  12. Gabriel Rosa

Psst! Psst! Phil, it’s Portuguese not *Portugese. :)

  13. Rodolfo

“Universo Implacável” (Implacable Universe), even if not a “right” translation, in portuguese it sounds much better than “Universo Mau” (Bad Universe).

  14. Anon

    Santa haleakala!

  15. Paula

    Hi!

I’m from Brazil and I just can’t wait to see your show here! I didn’t know you had one!

When I find out, I can tell you the translation of ” Holy Haleakala” –What does it mean??????

    hahahahaha

  16. Alex Monteiro

    That’s great news!
It will be fantastic to see the show in brazilian television.

  17. Thomas Siefert

    M: Hello, I want to… Ooooh!
H: No, no, no. Hold your head like this, then go Whoa!. Try it again.
    M: uuuwwhh!!
H: Better, Better, but Whoa!, Whoa!! Put your hand there.
    M: No.
    H: Now…
    M: Whoa!!!!
    H: Good, Good! That’s it.
    M: Stop hitting me!!
    H: What?
    M: Stop hitting me!!
    H: Stop hitting you?
    M: Yes!
H: Why did you come in here then?
    M: I wanted to complain.
H: Oh no, that’s next door. It’s being-hit-on-the-head lessons in here.
    M: What a stupid concept.

  18. Marcelo

Nice to know they put a professional for the dubbing.
That program with Marcelo Gleiser dubbing was terrible! Since then, my TV set is on SAP.

  19. Cindy

    18:
Marcelo Gleiser was my quantum mechanics prof in grad school. He has an amazing accent and is from Brazil. Though having him dub over Phil would be disconcerting to me.

  20. Gonçalo Aguiar

Oh my god when I opened this site and saw “Universo Implacável” I wondered: “did I press the right bookmark? I’m a reading Portuguese here??”
When is it coming to Portugal? :D

  21. Marcelo

    19:
Yes, Cindy his accent is called “carioca”, it is from Rio de Janeiro.
It is really strong and annoying to listen on a TV Show. He also speaks like he is reading a book for children. You can listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3OxPQv5SuA

He dubbed Mike Rowe in the series How the Universe Works. That’s a pitty because Mike Rowe has a very good brazillian “dubber” in the Dirty Jobs series who would do a much better job.

  22. Jim Gallant

Did they dub your voice for the UK version too?

  23. Lorena

oh yes, please, you are getting closer!!! I really want to see “universo malo” :D :D
I really hope your shows come to ARgentina :D

  24. Adilson

Hey im from Brazil also, yeah the minute i saw the commercial i recognized you from other series that pass here on Discovery and History Channel! It looks great, cheers from Brazil! (oh and yeah, i have to admit that usually here we have some really good dubbing that usually become classic lol. Like the guy they use here to dub Bear Grylls, its awesome!)

  25. mike burkhart

Thats good news.Off topic: I just saw District 9 good film not surpriseing the way the Aliens were treated by landing in South Africa ,South Africa had Aprited for decades. P.S. No offence to the people of South Africa but I’m a big surporter of racial equality.

  26. WJM

I’ve only seen the one episode, over and over again, up here in The Canada. (It’s the one where you blow stuff up.)

Can you send the other two?

  27. Gogolu

Not so long ago I have seen it in Poland, on Discovery channel.

  28. Pablo

    Whoa! Good news man!

“Universo implacável” is a good, catchy, name in pt-br

We are desperately in need for some good astronomy to reach the general public here in Brazil. Hope this inspire some people to search knowledge.

Next step: Translate “Death from the Skies” to Brazilian Portuguese. (I had to buy mine at amazon).

  29. Just out of curiosity, did you add any scenes of hunky brazilians hanging out on the beach?

    No, no reason. Just curious.

  30. who do they have dubbing you for the UK version?

  31. Pedro

OH YES! this is awesome news! now when are we getting “Death From the SKies” down here anyone?

  32. Jonatas

That’s good news for Brazil! Waiting for the airing!

Great dubbing and great name. Discovery Brasil, as usual, is doing an excellent work.

  33. Danilo Albergaria

    Awesome news, Phil!!

  34. How do you say “Holy Haleakala” in Portuguese? :)

  35. Glauco

Just put Santa Haleakala in google translator and click listen, with “from portuguese” selected. :)

Can’t wait to see your show in Brazil. o/

  36. Glauco

Just watched the show. Really liked the comic book atmosphere and is always good to see a new science show breaking the people’s routine. My country need more of this. Perhaps it could reach the free tv, one day.
