Curse you, Renee Marie Jones.

After a quick visit to Google Translate, your post actually made me tear up!

There's picture up at Fragile Oasis' Facebook page that is not only perhaps the most stunning image taken from the ISS or maybe from space at all, but also perfectly reflects the legacy of Yuri Gagarin. Here's the link:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=258287434214551&set=a.186244471418848.42018.124983354211627&type=1&theater

Note that you do not have to be assimilated into the Facebook collective to view or download the picture.

Yuri has never received the credit he's due. Not only was he the first human in space, he was the first to escape his capsule and land independent of it. Sure, it was a planned escape, but it was still very cool. Thankfully, every year there are people that remember Yuri and celebrate his accomplishment. Check out the Yuri's Night website.

Wow, you sure are late to this Dr. Plait!

That's okay, you're a busy guy, so it can be forgiven. :D

Here is my blog entry on the actual anniversary with the Google Doodle as well: http://larianlequella.blogspot.com/2011/04/50-years-ago.html

I know that a lot of Cold War politics got wrapped up in Yuri's flight but I have always seen him as an international hero. Sometimes all it takes is for one person to show that something can be done to start something wonderful. Yuri did that. He was the first man to strap himself on the top of a barely controlled explosion and view the Earth in an entirely different way proving that it could be done. There is just something great about that.
