There was, indeed, a world (or at least moon) shattering KA-BOOOM! It resulted in the formation of Saturn's rings from the unfortunate former moon's smashed and scattered icy innards. It happened millions (or at least hundreds of thousands of years ago) and Enceladus now orbits outside its former companion's shredded and spread out remains.
