Most of us aren't professional speakers so jump cuts save us from ourselves. It's better than someone doing a monotone blah blah blah video. At least I think so. :)

Didn't you link to this months ago? Maybe I saw it somewhere else.

It's a good message, but the kid comes off a bit psychotic.

@#5 Arkonby: Great message, but I really don’t like this new style of video editing that seeks to eliminate even the slightest pause between thoughts.
IFITDOESNTSAYMICROMACHINESITSNOTTHEREALTHING!
I like the commenter who said "Max Headroom here makes some good points."

I mean, yes, cuts like that can be used to smoothly transition between the best parts of various takes, but this video seems to just pile them up for the hell of it. Unless the speaker is stuttering and stumbling every 4 seconds, I don't understand the need for it.

EDIT:
@#10RwFlynn: One of the rules the vlogbrothers follow is that all their regular videos must be no longer than four minutes long (in the name of saving time). Hence the jump-cuts.

Ahh. That explains a lot. Although, that video is 4 minutes and 58 seconds long...

I'm not going to beat around the bush. I'm a small government-minded person. I don't mind NASA; in fact, I approve of much of what they do. I just have a problem with its government-funding as a matter of principle.

The guy in the video says that he can't wait to give his money to NASA. Well, according to this link, he doesn't have to wait. NASA accepts monetary gifts.

But ... ok, we've got "the awesome" for scientists, and engineers - and we need more of both - but I suspect the average person really doesn't feel they get anything out of it for *themselves*.

Perhaps we should look to the Casinos.

No, not the flashing lights and loud annoying bells ringing and stuff like that - but the basic technique they use to get people excited to go there - excited to participate.

1) Big payoffs - these are good - these are what everyone going there hopes for. But if it were *ONLY* the big payouts - the casinos would end up pretty empty, pretty fast.

2) The little payouts - the payoffs of 1-5x the risked amount - the kind the player immediately puts right back into the machine, to try some more. These are important - these are what makes casinos able to claim they pay out 99% of what they take in - while yet sending players back out the door with empty pockets. These keep the players playing - but they're *NOT* the big draw.

3) The medium payouts - 100x, 1000x the money put in... AH, *NOW* we're looking at why players flock to casinos like flamingos. These payouts happen often enough a player has a reasonable chance of getting one - and if they're passably intent on it - it *WILL* happen. You don't have to play 24/7, putting every dollar you have into a one-arm bandit - if you play an hour or two every weekend, putting perhaps as much as you would for a movie or good dinner - you will get one of these every two. Meanwhile, you're building up comp points and every 3 or 4 months, you end up with enough comp points to get that good dinner free.

We'll see how it goes. $200,000 a ticket for the payoff of 6 mins freefall doesn't quite seem enough to me, to really get things rolling - but maybe it's enough to build what *IS* needed to get that down to where things really get rolling.

But at the rate we're going, it's going to be a *VERY* long time until we have the equivalent of Hank Williams singing about how his wife took his last oxygen tank, shared his acceleration couch with the ship's cabin boy, and drove his last booster engine right up his assteroid.

Better to hear this than to hear politicians quibble over who's in and out of the presidental race.

One way I see to reduce the 'suck' with the ISS; use it for another 500 day Mars Mission Simulation.
I think THAT would increase the awesome.

Also in the science cheer-leading section, this Neil DeGrasse Tyson interview (by Stephen Colbert!) was just posted. It's almost 2 years old, but this looks to be the first posting of the whole interview (though I could be mistaken). Anyhow, enjoy!

"Offering them patents on technologies developed for NASA"

... that's supposed to be a good thing?
My best interpretation of that sentence is that it sounds like the kind of subventions that were the basis of the recent Boeing/Airbus kerfluffle.
