Talk in Tyler, Texas tonight

By Phil Plait | January 10, 2012 10:02 am

Sorry for the short notice — I was going to post Monday but the day got away from me — but I’ll be giving my “Death From The Skies!” talk tonight in Tyler, Texas at the Tyler Junior College at 6:30 p.m. You can get the details at the Hudnell Planetarium blog. I hope to see some of you there!

Dang! Wish I had known earlier, that’s not that far away for me!

  2. James

Are you going to be anywhere else in Texas this week?

  3. kuoirad

I would have thought you’d be down here in Austin for AAS…

  4. Watch out for them Texans. Many of them seem to have averse reactions to reality.

  5. Mag

Graduated from TJC in ’92 with an electrical engineering degree. It’s a nice city.

@Larian – yes, we also all wear cowboy hats and live on dude ranches – just like on TV!!! Drop the stereotypes, OK? “It’s not good manners” – as my grandmother would say.

  6. Mag you mean what your Mema would say.

  7. @Mag, was a bit of a joke (considering the numerous “Texas: DOOMED” pictures Phil has posted, and the poor reception Bill Nye got in Waco. Common lore in these parts.)

I lived in Del Rio. My in-laws currently live in (what’s left of) Bastrop, and prior to that in Austin. I am familiar with Texas. Don’t be too touchy, and laugh a little. :)

  8. ETexAstro

Larian, What Texian’s are adverse to is not Reality (maybe Reality TV), but Snooty Folks that “claim” they have a good friend from Texas and aren’t really making fun of him/her. ‘Cides, is Del Rio really in Texas?

Since I lives in Tyler and bees a Astronomeer, I am going to listen to Mr. Plait tonight. Since he worked on the Hubble, I want to know if he is the one that made the Billion $$ Boo-Boo on the Mirror AND failed to check it with the simplest of devices – Foucault Knife Edge Tester????!!! Few bucks – Saves a $1,000,000,000 cuda been a great ROI

    Aw, that’s only, like, a three-hour drive away! And it’s 5:50, if I speed I could almost make it…

I second James’ question, will you be anywhere else in northern TX this week? I’d love to see a Death from The Skies talk and I know somebody I’d bring along, too.

  10. Heather A. W.

I’m sorry I’m going to have to miss you! I didn’t hear soon enough to get a babysitter!

  11. Meskine

Aw, you dog! I’m only 90 miles away, but reading this at 7:15. Sigh…

  12. Mag

@Larian – no worries. Wasn’t trying to sound like a jerk. As a native Texan, I just get really irritated with all the crazy stereotyping Texans get on TV and media in general.

  13. Sorry folks, it was all Tyler all day, and now I’m heading home. I’ll be back here again sometime, I’m sure. :)

  14. Blake

Aw, man. That’s not very far from here. I probably would have come and checked it out had I known about it. Maybe next time.

  15. wildcardjack

You’re about three years too late for me to make this one.

  16. Phil, you did a great job last night. Wish i had gotten there for the pre game show. At least i got to shake your hand. Keep on inspiring us skeptics.

  17. Also like you said, it was probably best not to talk politics in these parts. even though im sure everyone there was on the same page one way or another

You asked what the asteroid looked like? A chicken nugget.
