I’ll be on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on Wednesday night!

I am really ridiculously happy to announce that I’ll be a guest on the CBS TV program "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" Wednesday night February 29!

I’m a huge fan of Craig’s (see Related Posts below for articles I’ve written about his show) for a lot of reasons, mostly because he’s obviously very smart — he did a five minute bit in his opening monologue once about Copernicus — and also because he’s a friend of the geek, having had guests on like Adam Savage, Chris Hardwick, Jennifer Ouellette, and various cast members from Doctor Who. He’s also a big science nerd; he follows me on Twitter, so he clearly has exceptional taste.

So when I was asked to be on the show, I took nearly 60 nanoseconds to mull it over, and flew to LA to pre-tape this Leap Day show a couple of weeks ago.

As far as what happened on the segment… well, I won’t tell you. You’ll have to tune in and see… though I’ll note that Craig is known for his somewhat risque humor, and I’m not always the highest brow when it comes to science either. Still, I can show you this picture I took of me in the show Green Room:

Yup. I’m a dork.

The show airs on CBS at 12:35 a.m./11:35 p.m. (check your local listings blah blah blah) on Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

What the? – Is that an alien tentacle in the background?

    Well, that’s fun!

Yeah, what are those things on the table and such? Looks more like the children’s discovery room at a science center.

Gratz! I’m setting up the DVR now!

I thought it was a rule that you had to “duckface” when you took a picture of yourself?

SWEET! This definitely increments your geek factor, and I will certainly be watching! But since I turn into a pumpkin by that time of night and still haven’t gotten around to getting a DVR, I will watch it when it hits the Internet. ;-)

    @1

It looks like a dog tail or the paw of a cat about ready to hit Phil.

Though if I squint really hard and stand on my head, it looks like a finger puppet of Jesus. ;-)

@13 – I dunno, when I see something and don’t know what it is, it’s safe to assume that it’s an alien that came here from very far away, and probably from another time and dimension, too. I think it’s pretty obvious and any government official who says otherwise is in on the cover-up, too.

If you’re on the east coast, please note that the show airs on 3/1 at 12:37am! DirecTV has the description right, and lists Phil as a guest.

I would bluff a refusal to go on the show unless I was included in one of their puppet lip-synch & dance intros.

Also you missed a chance to use “click to fergusonate”.

  29. 29.   HvP Says:
    February 28th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

VinceRN, and all others that might not get to record this stellar event…

CBS hosts past shows on their website for about a week or two, including The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

The geek is definitely strong with Ferguson. His monologues often tangent into science and philosophy and I get the impression he leans a bit to the skeptics’ side. I adore Craig almost as much as I adore Phil. I can’t think of a better reason to stay up tomorrow night :)

  30. 30.   Daniel J. Andrews Says:
    February 28th, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Congrats, Phil. I’ll check for it online at some point (no tv hooked up here, and I have no idea how to “check local listings” even if it was hooked up). Anyway, hope you do more of this stuff and get the message out that science is glorious and wonderful and for everyone.

Craig had a great long interview with Stephen Fry, sans audience, once, quite a bold move for Yankee network television. I think its on youtube.

Forgetting that it’s still only Tuesday, I looked up the TV listings for my city (Vegas) to see if the BA is listed for the Late Late Show, and I see that Dr. Oz is on tonight! Quack one night, skeptic the next… Now I wonder is Craig Ferguson is going to go after him or just celebrate him like any other talk show host.

  36. 36.   Mark Says:
    February 29th, 2012 at 4:45 am

Hope you watched where you stepped. Assuming they taped the shows in order, Dr. Oz was there the day before…

For NOLA fans, TLLSWCF runs slightly later, as it actually starts on WWLTV @12:05 instead of 11:35PM. Don’t forget to check your local listings, y’all!

Hate to say it, but it’s 1 AM, and the first guest hasn’t even come out. I fear you will be cut.

  41. 41.   Autumn Says:
    February 29th, 2012 at 11:36 pm

I was wrong, and you were really good. I liked the bits of astronomy you were able to throw in, given the time restraints, I just wish Craig’s first question was to ask for your rebuttal of (awesomely funny) Tom Lennon’s assertion that we can’t figure out what day it is. A simple, “We watch until the sun rises in the same place” would have been neat.

  42. 42.   Tensor Says:

Funny Phil. Good rendition of Ode to Joy.

  43. 43.   Harold Says:

Congratulations on your award! I’ll keep this vague so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet – but I think it would have been even better if you had used your tongue on some of the holes. I always get better results that way when I do what you did.

I think Craig is pretty great and watch him on a semi-regular basis, but add the Bad Astronomer into the mix and I had to catch it! And I wasn’t disappointed (except by the length of the segment but so it always goes on that show). You were great. Hilarious.

Great segment on Craig last night! I fell asleep during the commercial break between Tom Lennon and you and woke up at 2 am! But thanks to the DVR I hit rewind and watched it. Great stuff!

Well done, Phil, although–being unaware of your hidden talent–I was guessing you’d go for guessing what was in Craig’s box to end the interview. I thought you comported yourself quite well and kept up nicely with Craig’s frenetic wit. (“You need to spend more time on the Internet.” Nice one!)

  48. 48.   Dave Mitsky Says:

Congrats Phil! Craig is indeed friend to the the geeks. You listed some very cool nerdy types above who have been on Craig – let me add to your list my very talented, science geek / skeptic husband who has been on TWICE! Jamy Ian Swiss! He is magically delicious. (Hope to see you soon my friend)
