Portland, Oregon talk OF DEATH

By Phil Plait | July 30, 2012 10:29 am

I’m very excited to be heading up to Portland, Oregon on Wednesday, August 1, to give my "Death from the Skies!" talk at the Bagdad Theater. This is part of the OMSI Science Pub series, a laid-back event where people like me talk to people like you about stuff like science. In my case, I’ll be talking asteroid impacts and crispy dinosaurs and making fun of the movie "Armageddon" and then saving the world.

This talk is open to the public and starts at 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 5). Tickets are $20 and are available for purchase online. The Oregon Space Grant blog has more info too.

I’ll be doing a book signing afterwards, too. I’ve never been to Portland, so I’m pretty happy about this. I like Oregon quite a bit.

  1. Portland will welcome you with open arms. Just be prepared, as the hands at the end of the arms will be holding tankards of ale. Have a great show!

  2. And here I was thinking of looking around to see if there was any word of there being a signing at the event. Huzzah! Thanks for answering my as-yet-unasked question, sir!

Time to put my copy of the book into my camera bag so I have it handy…

  3. squee! Welcome in advance to Portland, best city ever. :D

  4. Excellent! Just bought my tickets. Looking forward to your presentation.

  5. Bigfoot

Wait; that’s Bigfoot country! But I’ll be out of town! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I’ve been waiting for you to come to Portland for years! Years!!! I guess I’ll just have to fervently hope that your first Portland appearance is not your last.

Urk, only 3 hours away. Still too far for a Wednesday night. Pop over to Bend while your in Oregon Phil! It’s nicer on this side of the mountains :)

You will love Stumptown, it’s a great place. Make sure you stop by Voodoo doughnuts before you leave!

  7. So close, and yet too far. You should come north!

  8. Nick

Gah! And I won’t be in Portland until Friday :[

  9. David Martin

Ticket purchased. I will see you soon. Welcome to Portland!

Next year, schedule a trip out here to coincide with the Oregon Star Party in Central Oregon. I know you have nice skies in Colorado but it’s hard to beat the OSP location for dark skies.

We went to OMSI for the first time a couple of weeks ago, on our way through Portland, and thought it was pretty much the best discovery museum ever, even better than the Exploratorium. Looks like it is only a ten minute drive from that theater. Unfortunately you are a few days early for the “Star Trek in the Park” – this summer they are doing Journey to Babel, on August weekends. And of course you have to go to Powell’s bookstore.

    Yes, North . . . just a smidge

  12. Portland. On the goofy facial hair scale, just slightly below Seattle.

  13. Wish I could go but I don’t have the $$$. I hope you like Portland!

  15. @ Reidh:

Yes, it is a very happy city.

  16. Awesome talk last night. Total sqweee!

I know it was kind of cheating to bundle two questions, but thanks for touching on both 4-Vesta and LIGO (I couldn’t decide what I wanted to ask). I didn’t know we have found meteorites on Earth of similar composition to 4-Vesta. Onward to Ceres!
