A BSG colonies star map? So say we all!

By Phil Plait | January 28, 2011 1:27 pm

If you’re a Battlestar Galactica fan, then here’s something you’ll need to navigate the colonies: a star map of the Colonial systems created by BSG writer and co-executive producer Jane Espenson and science advisor Kevin Grazier!

OOOoooo, can I get a "frak yeah!" from the flight deck?

That’s pretty cool. And given that Kevin has a degree in astrophysics and works on the Cassini Saturn probe, one assumes he knows his stuff. Heck, I know he does: we’ve been friends for a few years now. The link above goes to the sci-fi blog io9 which has an interview with Kevin and Jane about the map, too. And if you like it, you can order a 27″ x 29″ poster of it from Quantum Mechanix.

Alternate Universe airshow

By Phil Plait | June 23, 2010 10:00 am

Via SciFiWire comes this amazing series pictures from the SciFi Airshow. This is seriously cool geeky stuff.

Sigh. Beautiful. The gifted artist Bill George has created a huge series of pictures depicting real-life scenes with some of the best science fiction spaceships of all time. I suspect most of you out there haven’t even heard of the old scifi series "Space:1999" — it had a profound impact on my young self, and it spawned one of the most beautiful ships of all time: the Eagle. George has created a whole passel of Eagle images, and they’re spectacular! He even has several hi-res versions you can download.

scifiairshow_hawkHe has shots of ships from "Battlestar Galactica", "2001", "Land of the Giants" (who remembers that show?), and "Star Trek". These are truly amazing photos he’s put together, and if you’re of a certain age I expect your heart will pang with what could’ve been.

I hope he puts out a lot more of these. My heart races when I watch rocket launches and space activity IRL, but it was these shows that excited and inspired me as a kid… and still do as a grownup. We need to dream, and seeing these dreams made real — even if only in Photoshop — is still compelling.

Marian Call in Boulder July 3-4!

By Phil Plait | June 15, 2010 12:10 pm

mariancall_gardenofthegodsI’ve written about Marian Call before: the fiery-haired songstress who croons her cleverly-written songs about Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and being a geek.

Marian is currently on a tour of all 50 states, and on July 3rd and 4th she’ll be right here in Boulder! On the 3rd she’s performing at the Trident coffeeshop (940 Pearl Street) from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. If you live in the area, and you’re a geek — face it, you are — then you should come. She’s set up a Facebook page to get an idea of how many people will attend. The next day — July 4 — she’ll be at the Folsom St. Coffee Shop (1795 Folsom St) at 5:00pm. Both concerts are free, but you should chip in a few bucks if you go to support her!

After Boulder, she’s heading down Colorado Springs (check her schedule at the link above), so if you’re in Boulder you should see her while you can.

You can get samples of her music on her page; her music is quirky and fun and personal (here’s a review from a newcomer to her music, a woman who heard Marian for the first time recently on this tour). To give you a better sense of what she’s about, check out this fan-made video featuring her music and scenes from Firefly. It’s really good:

I’ve already made my reservation at Trident. The venue is intimate, so better hurry up and get counted! I hope to see lots of other BABloggees there.
