[...] I come for the wonderful physics that gets done here at the Aspen Center for Physics (some of which I’ve already reported on in a few recent posts) and the fact that I’m welcome to come and contribute. I come here for the music that I’ve already told you about. I also come here for things that a lot of other people come here for: - Let me just shut up and show you what I saw on the hike today: [...]

It is only the fractional quantum hall effect that has a chance of showing the neccesary topological degrees of freedom needed in this context, as far as is known, I believe. Were someone to demonstrate a topological phase in the Hall context at room temperature, that would be rather good. The search for topological phases, as I understand it, could well yield surprises in several places, though. -cvj

The classic Hall effect shows already at room temperatures (230-410 K) and small magnetic fields (15 mT) in semiconductors, of course - just ask the engineers down the hall: http://www.micronas.com/products/overview/sensors/index.php#apps.

By the way, you shouldn't confuse "number of comments" for "interest," for obvious reasons. I'd like to hear more about supercosmology!

I had recently heard about a related but somewhat different idea about using topological field theory in quantum computing. This idea by Friedman, Rasetti and several others is not about error correction, but about complexity classes. A report and some discussion of this can be found here at the Coffee Table.

Ok, working a bit harder, here is a link that works on IE only (not sure why)

http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca:81/MediasiteLive30/LiveViewer/FrontEnd/Front.aspx?cid=a9b1d20a-efa7-485f-8d5d-3b62fb7d3e4c

also, from his webpage, a talk he gave at Santa-Barbara which looks identical at first glance.

http://online.kitp.ucsb.edu/online/exotic_c04/preskill/

which will probably work in other browsers as well.

best,

Moshe

I could not go to today's talk, but there was a really wonderful colloquium on the subject by John Preskill at the perimeter (during our summer school), it is recorded (try starting the navigation at http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/activities/scientific/seminarseries/alltalks.cfm).

If I remember correctly he mentioned he has lecture notes on the subject on his website, but I never got to check.

best,

Moshe

Aaron: According to "Mission Impossible", the NSA already has them, if I recall a line from Ving Rhames' character correctly.

Mark: Thanks. Good way of working up an appetite. Really hungry now!
