Lessons in Empathy

by Risa Wechsler

We’ve got a lot of rebuilding to do. First, we’re going to save lives and stabilize the situation. And then we’re going to help these communities rebuild. The good news is — and it’s hard for some to see it now — that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott’s house — he’s lost his entire house — there’s going to be a fantastic house. And I’m looking forward to sitting on the porch. (Laughter.)

– President George W. Bush

CNN Anchor:

The people we are seeing in this footage are largely black and largely poor, and they are largely being left behind. What message does this send to the rest of the world about America?

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay:

What it tells me is we’re doing a wonderful job…

Anyone know of any sites where I can donate to help Trent rebuild his vacation home?

On the subject of empathy, the President’s form of Compassionate Conservatism, which one would imagine in a world that didn’t mistake up for down, should have at its core the concept of one person empathizing with the plight of another and working to help ease the other’s burden. Unfortunately, in the real world, Compassionate Conservatism means exactly the opposite and seems to be whole-heartedly embraced now by the National Guard:

The folks at CNN also seem to have caught on to how the Great Leader’s dealing with this tragedy,

Maybe if the people of New Orleans all had $20000 or so to donate to the Shrub and the Republican Party, aid would be rushing down there faster than Condi can buy shoes.

Trent Lott’s no friend of Bush anymore, not since Bush stabbed in him in the back following Lott’s rather ill-advised comments regarding the nasty old racist Strom Thurmond.
