Spotted yesterday in Hollywood while on my bike to work:
Very clean and shiny new black BMW 7 series with the plates:
MATHPMP
Was right next to it at the traffic lights, but a valiant scrabble in my front pannier did not turn up the camera quickly enough. It is usually ready for occasions such as this, but this time was under the emergency raincoat I’d decided to stuff into the bag -which of course I never used all day, and so got soaked twice on campus.
Anyway, does this mean there are both lucrative and lurid applictions of a mathematics education of which I’d hitherto not been aware? How exciting! Or does the proud driver sinply own a staff of street corner mathematics tutors?
Inquiring minds need to know.

I love the dorky licence plate. I’ve seen some gems, such as “PHY 6″ and “PLANETS”, and of course, my all-time favorite (my own): “OBAFGKM”

My favorite LA licence plate I’ve seen was
SLA FIDE
I’m surprised the DMV let that through. (And surprised there is still someone living 70′s terrorism and willing to boast about it.)

CVJ, I’m shocked that you can distinguish a 7-series BMW like that. You aren’t a closet car-fan by any chance?

Jack, BMW is like Toyota in Los Angeles. Everybody and their dog drives one, and can recognize the types. I am not exaggerating. The 3-series is like the Corolla, and the 5-series and 7-series are like the Camry and the Avalon. (And the new 6-series is BMW’s biggest recent mistake…it looks like a Pontiac. Not that there’s anything wrong with that….!)
(Mercs are pretty much common as muck here too….)
I’ve nothing against cars -love ‘em in fact and own one myself which I drive on the weekends- I just have everything against people driving them everywhere unnecessarily.
Cheers,
