um. noone else has pointed out that gleeful posts about the poisoning of police officers aren't really nice things to do? Those police officers are not at all responsible for Bush's foreign policies.

Not being a literary giant, I have never read Debt to Pleasure. However, any book that combines food with pink flamingoes must have something going for it!

Sean turned me on to it some years ago. I then read Mr. Phillips which is also a fine book by Lanchester.

Sean - Well, I think the amount of stock required for each recipe is probably detailed... :D I have never tested any out myself either - not a big fan of Irish stew, which I seem to remember was one of them...

Debt to Pleasure is one of my all-time favorite books. Wouldn't place much stock in the recipes, though.

JoAnne: Have you ever read "A Debt to Pleasure" by John Lanchester? I ask because the introduction of pink flamingoes into a discussion centred on food reminded me of this passage:

' 'Ooh, that looks nice,' she would say. 'Lovely and pink,' she would sometimes add, a weakness for the colour pink being an infallible sign of the defective taste one associates with certain groups and individuals: the British working classes, grand French restaurateurs, Indian street-poster designers and God, whose fatal susceptibility for the colour is so apparent in the most lavishly cinematic instances of his handiwork (sunsets, flamingos).'

Despite being a little disappointed to hear that I have defective taste, I highly recommend this book - extremely funny, and mouthwatering descriptions of food (including recipes).
