Who’s On Cosmic Variance?

by Mark Trodden

Occasionally, I take a look at the “who’s on?” feature of our web stats, because I find it fascinating to see the spread of people who take time to read blogs. This one time, I thought I’d share the result with you. I’ve annnotated the list where I recognized the domain; typically university addresses.

I realize that the time of the day that one looks at the stats plays a large part in determining which time zones the majority of visitors are from. But I had to do it at some time and I just happened to have a half hour free right now.

At 8:46pm this evening, people from the following locations were reading Cosmic Variance (more than one person from several of these locations).

I should hasten to add that we are not able to pinpoint any more information about a hit on the site than the originating domain. We cannot identify individual users or computers (and we have no interest in doing so).

    Cheers,

    -cvj

But I’d check under the bed before going to sleep tonight, just in case.

Ha, Clifford is too modest. I’m quite interested in knowing the identities and personal habits of all the people who visit the site. To this end, I’ve installed a clever and subtle virus that infiltrates your computer as soon as you visit, and forwards to me all of your credit card numbers.

Really, a small price to pay for all this sparkling content.

If you check in the morning, PST, you will probably find a lot more readers from Europe.

By the way, I guess you know that bitchPhd is currently involved in a case where a visitor tries to figure out her identity from the IP traffic in order to sue her.

I’m a citizen of the world – born in S.Asia, study/work in the USA, play music that came from Germany and Austria, regularly eat Couscous with Chinese food. My boss is from Brazil – in his own words BrazEEEEEEEEEEl :)

And of course I love Al Gore’s wonderful invention – the internet.

    • Cosmic Variance Cosmic Variance is a group blog by people who, coincidentally or not, all happen to be physicists and astrophysicists:
      • Daniel Holz
      • JoAnne Hewett
      • John Conway
      • Julianne Dalcanton
      • Mark Trodden
      • Risa Wechsler
      • Sean Carroll
Our day (and night) jobs notwithstanding, the blog is about whatever we find interesting — science, to be sure, but also arts, politics, culture, technology, academia, and miscellaneous trivia. We have similar outlooks on many things, widely disparate opinions about others, and will do our best to keep the discourse reasonably elevated.
