Lurkers at the New Views Conference

by Mark Trodden

I arrived yesterday at New Views of the Universe, the Inaugural Symposium of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. I’ve been having a wonderful time, and have been hanging out a bit with co-bloggers Sean and Risa. I will have time to post properly about this trip when I get back, on Wednesday.

However, I wanted to mention one thing immediately. In the last two days I’ve come across a lot of people who I know, who are regular Cosmic Variance readers and who, because they haven’t commented, have remained lurkers.

Now there’s no pressure, but I thought it might be fun to see whether, if you are at this conference, and are a reader, you’d like to identify yourself in the comments.

Anyone?

In Academic Flash Blog Clifford help to identified some of the new ways we are doing things.

If there is such a gathering, within the confines of the lecture, can verbalization be given to different perspectives forming, as the lecture unfolds? Non?

Then how about immediately afterward, while retention time is quite lucid? Then do the flash blogging?

We see universities are moving to courses on the internet, would such a benefit of educated hindsight not serve to direct the views of society in a responsible way? Had the issues been spelt out right from the beginning?

You know I like to see the “perfect world,” and if protectionism raised it’s head to a universities capitalistic survival, then woud we have limited the potential to raise the standards in society??

Maybe pushng the boundary here in such flash blogging woud incite further exploits of the those who endeavor with motivations to understand reality?

I was at the dinner Friday Night honoring David Schramm. It was interesting to see the major influence he had on using the “Large” and “Small” together to better understand things as well as being a major mover and shaker getting things done including the Cosmology group at Fermilab etc.

Unfortunately I was unable to stay for Leon Lederman’s speech.

Mark. Sorry I did not see you there or I would have introduced myself.

I was there, and I lurk here (note I’m ditching the last session to get some actual work done… but I’m reading blogs instead)

I am a lurker, not at the meeting, but you do know me. Been lurking since your first day at Orange Quark.

Dude, I used the word “landscape” in my talk. The only person in the room who laughed was Shapley. Do you owe me a drink? I don’t think I got any kind of a commitment from you…damn!

Hey – what I owed you was to be in the talk – which I was. You also used the word “brane”, which was nice of you, because you helped out Alice, who totally bottled out. Aw, what the heck, I’ll happily owe you a drink. Good meeting you – see you soon. Cheers.

    • Cosmic Variance Cosmic Variance is a group blog by people who, coincidentally or not, all happen to be physicists and astrophysicists:
      • Daniel Holz
      • JoAnne Hewett
      • John Conway
      • Julianne Dalcanton
      • Mark Trodden
      • Risa Wechsler
      • Sean Carroll
Our day (and night) jobs notwithstanding, the blog is about whatever we find interesting — science, to be sure, but also arts, politics, culture, technology, academia, and miscellaneous trivia. We have similar outlooks on many things, widely disparate opinions about others, and will do our best to keep the discourse reasonably elevated.
