Then, back in 1992, my sister and I had planned to take out my mother for her birthday, but the LA riots had begun a couple of days before and somehow it didn't feel appropriate to go out and have fun, so we stayed home. To make up for it, we took my mom out for Mother's Day brunch a couple of weeks later, and afterward she said "This was fun! Let's do it again next year." And we have. I have mixed feelings about Mother's Day. It's a nice enough tradition as long as it's not the only day we acknowledge our mothers. My concern is that, like secretary's day, for a lot of people it becomes the one day that they try to make up for a lack of appreciation the rest of the year. Not that I think anybody here would do that! My little girl is too young to bring me breakfast in bed. In fact, I'm still giving her breakfast in bed!
