Joel Peterson is the founder of Ravenswood Winery and one of the founders of ZAP. I just posted a podcast I did interviewing him. He discusses ZAP and why he chose to focus on Zinfandels. It is an inspiring story.

I hope you enjoy it!

Oh, and by the way, it goes without saying, of course, that Zinfandel is a red wine.

Uh? It goes without saying that Zinfandel is a red grape, but not all white wines are blanc-de-blancs. Red grapes can give rise to white or rose wines, depending on how late in the fermentation process the skins are removed. I have tried blush Zinfandel on some occasion, although I was never very impressed by it.

I know only a little bit about wine... more than most of my friends--one of the benefits of going to grad school at a University with a hotel management program is that you can take (and get credit for) a wine tasting class, and spend a semester's worth of Wednesday afternoons tasting 6 wines.

I do like Zinfandel, and in fact I picked up a Zinfandel to drink during the Superbowl. But as a bears fan, I think I would have had a much better time at ZAP!

Turley is certainly one of my favorite Zins (along with some of the 3R's you mentioned). Having just had a Turley Old Vines '98 with my dinner tonight I can add that it really is an incredibly powerful Zin. Many Zins do not age but Turley seems to do well for about 10 yrs due to the high alcohol content. Too bad Turley can only be obtained(for sale) at the winery and by being on their mailing list...Of course, many good restaurants carry it. When I was in Beijing a few years ago I was suprised to see Turley on a restaurant wine list..the markup was approximately 2 orders of magnitude & would have paid for my airfare & hotel with plenty left over to spend. However at this years ZAP tasting, for my money, Sidejob was even better..& that means a lot! Keep your eyes out for this wine!

Oh, and by the way, it goes without saying, of course, that Zinfandel is a red wine.

Ha! Yes. I'm always a little disturbed when I'm at a restaurant where it doesn't go without saying.
