We call them "jesus boarders" here in Vancouver. No waves, so they just stand on the water paddling around.

You surf? Too cool. I knew there was a reason I read this blog. Good points about the SUPs, I hadn't thought about the danger to others since I've only seen a few on the East Coast and in Costa Rica.

We used paddleboards back in the early 60's at Glen Lake, Michigan. No waves of any size but it sure was fun to paddle around. Glad they are making a comeback.

These barges suck. They steal waves and are dangerous to other surfers if they're in the wrong hands. If you're gonna start surfing, don't start on one of these. work your way up to it so that you learn the etiquette of the line-up and don't just trample over everyone else trying to have a good time. Basically, don't take a SUP-board to a paddle-in break, just like how you don't tow into a paddle-in break. Articles like this are a good way to clog the line-up with kooks. thanks a lot mr. author who knows so much about surfing.

Well, another way to tell how mainstream it has become is that Gerry Lopez is producing paddleboards that are compressible and portable; that and they hold onto the face of the wave very well. Living up here in the inland northwest you wouldn't think much about surf. But another ancient surfer and myself are looking forward to this spring to start riding standing waves in the rivers on these paddleboards. When you are in your 60s, these boards make a lot more sense.
