Clifford V. Johnson is a professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of Southern California. His research is mainly on (super)string theory, gravity, gauge theory and M-theory, the goal being to understand how the universe works. He blogged at Cosmic Variance from 2005 to 2006.

Our day (and night) jobs notwithstanding, the blog is about whatever we find interesting — science, to be sure, but also arts, politics, culture, technology, academia, and miscellaneous trivia. We have similar outlooks on many things, widely disparate opinions about others, and will do our best to keep the discourse reasonably elevated.
