Let me look... here's an early study that found that 'elderly' people have weaker BOLD response to a simple task - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10385577 But that wouldn't explain the increased cingulate cortex response in old people. The qualitative result might be correct but the quantitative one is def not.
