Could this accumulation of bacteria in snow have anything to do with the common cold and the flu happening mostly in winter?

Yes, it's interesting -- scientists are actually looking at the life cycle of these bacteria from a new perspective now. The ways that plant pathogens are spread around is of huge agricultural importance and knowing that bacteria can be cycled with water may help researchers to identify previously unknown sources of these bacteria. For example, we know of several land plants that harbor these bugs, but the data indicate that they may be found in Antarctica seas as well.

Very interesting. I wonder how this all figures into the life cycle for these bacteria.
