Plenty of respected journals have low impact factors. The Journal of Human Evolution, the flagship journal of palaeoanthropology, has an impact factor of only 4.31. The American Journal of Physical Anthropology, the top journal of physical anthropology in the world has an impact factor of 2.3.

Oikos looks like a respected journal to me, it just happens to come from Sweden, so it is without a doubt a journal with a smaller audience. But that has nothing to do with the respect it garners.

returning to (2), I agree that it doesn't make sense to compare an ecology journal to NEJM, so I removed that reference. Thank you for your input Dr. Grim.

Dr. Grim,

(1) Thank you for the correction—I apologize for the error and will remove the text.
(2) As you can see in my post, I did point out the ranking of the journal in the Ecology subfield.

Just to correct two errors:

(1) "Dr. Grim ... has only two English publications in the past nine years" - please see the Web of Science or
http://www.zoologie.upol.cz/osoby/Grim/publications_science.htm

(2) The comparison of IFs clearly shows you should not write about science - the fallacy of between-field comparison of IFs was criticized some 20 years ago (see e.g. papers I refer to in my Oikos paper) and you are the first person I see to made such a stupid mistake:-) E.g. from the point of view of ecology the New England Journal of Medicine is just as irrelevant as any obscure journal published in central Bulgaria:-)
