A Zen Garden for Robots

Last weekend was Maker Faire Bay Area, a two-day festival of DIY goodness hosted by Make Magazine. The festival features a fair amount of art straight off the Burning Man playa, along with some originals that wouldn’t do as well in desert storms. This kinetic sculpture, called Sisyphus V, was designed by Dr. Bruce Shapiro. The autonomous steel sphere is controlled by a magnetic arm that moves about two axes, Etch-a-Sketch style.

Other notable exhibits at Maker Faire: a mind-reading martini maker, knitting drums, a buscycle, Disney’s flying robotic Tinkerbell, and a toy that translates movement into fire.
