It was certainly not invented by Christ, since Christ himself was baptised by John the Baptist, who probably adapted the Jewish festival to represent the cleansing of sin (for which I would guess is probably the reasoning behind the Jewish ritual, but I'm afraid I know very little about Jewish traditions that are not/hardly mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible.)
