The OK Go Video: Playing With the Speed of Time

By Eliza Strickland | June 16, 2010 9:21 am

OK Go strikes again.

Their last video memorably featured a Rube Goldberg machine that filled a two-floor warehouse and took four minutes to complete its sequence of wonder and mayhem. This time, the tech-happy band recruited Jeff Lieberman and Eric Gunther–artists, musicians, and all-around interesting guys–to direct the video.

Together, the team warped time. Check out the video, and read below for some details about the project from Lieberman.

From Lieberman:

“The fastest we go is 172,800x, compressing 24 hours of real time into a blazing 1/2 second. The slowest is 1/32x speed, stretching a mere 1/2 second of real time into a whopping 16 seconds. This gives us a fastest to slowest ratio of 5.5 million. If you like averages, the average speed up factor of the band dancing is 270x. In total we shot 18 hours of the band dancing and 192 hours of LA skyline timelapse – over a million frames of video – and compressed it all down to 4 minutes and 30 seconds! Oh and don’t forget, it’s one continuous camera shot.”

“We also made a special friend in the process. Her name is Orange Bill and she’s a goose. You will agree that she clearly has a future in music videos.”

If only their music were as awesome as their videos! :)

  • Cullpepper

    Wow. That goose is awesome.

  • http://printersforever.com Max

    I love the goose.

I made a fast motion video in 2007 of one of my songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLWzhFILZlQ

    They win :(

  • Jansen

Yeah, I don’t have any of their albums but I always give them props for the videos! They must have a lot of patience and team spirit. And Max, I liked yours too–check it out, people!

  • dude

Wow, common wisdom is that ok-go sucks, which means that their music must be pretty good actually. I mean, how much music have you personally made that’s better?

  • Nathan

Yeah the video is eye candy and innovative but why did they make it? What does it have to do with this song? This band is such a hilarious sell-out, publicity seeking piece of s***.

…but this song is pretty catchy…

The goose is the star, without a doubt.

  • Stevnv

I’m having a hard time believing the goose is not an actor- unless it just hatched and imprinted. Nice video.

  • drew

This tops the treadmill video. and the song is sweet! You people that say the music sucks, I’d be interested to know what you listen to. probably crap.

/been a fan since 03 when the s/t came out

  • http://www.musicbyday.com Marvin

Brilliant video… The videos they’ve put out for this album have been really great and I think this one is the best yet.

  • Bern

The song somehow reminds me of New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle …

  • werd

Hey Drew. You’ve been listening to s****y music since 03. Congrats.

No one should ever expect a peaceful night’s sleep at Echo Park lake. Except, maybe… a goose with with an unignorable skill set!

hi thanks for the awesome video, and I like the song too. good stuff :)

  • Richard

This video is not available in your country.

    Gee, thanks.

    bs…

Such restrictions do not only put out international audience but also help destroying the Internet by creating a global localnet. Geo-restricting information is on a par with limitations to free speech. What is free speech worth if there is no free hearing?

I see the “Bizarre Love Triangle” comment… also sounds like a heavy daub of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U”.

For people that are hating on their music- make sure you listen to the album first! I wasn’t a huge fan of a couple of their hits off their first two albums (they were good- just a little bubblegum for me), but Of The Blue Colour of the Sky is just mindblowingly awesome and a total departure. So much depth and complex emotions throughout the record and mixed by the guy from Mercury Rev that does the Flaming Lips albums (I think).
Also- XiXiDu, if you go to the band’s website, you can dl the new video for freeeeee. Yeessss!

  • ジョバン

WOW! what’s more amazing is this is one looo~ng continuous shot compressed into 4~ minutes, whew. I easily get anxious [that i might commit mistakes] in constructing rube goldbergs, even domino setups… i think i’ll faint on this one

  • LLORNKCOR

While we may not all agree on what is good or bad music I think we can all agree that this video is visually entertaining, right? In an age of music videos being pumped out with little artistic vision I always enjoy what OK Go and their respective directors might come up with next. I am not a huge fan of OK Go but I acknowledge their right to exist. Also, I have not really sat down and examined their music. It is usually pretty catchy, though. I like it!

  • Ed

Well, “dude”, how many movies has Roger Ebert made? How many banks has a detective robbed? How many songs has Ryan Seacrest sung?

  • lwitz

uhh, okgo a sellout? to whom? they are on their own record label ran by themselves…

  • Magnus

Amazing video! the song is pretty damn awesome too. Although I feel the video could do without the skyline timelapse at the end. And to think that the whole thing was done on one continuous shot is mind-boggling. Seriously good work!

  • Bart

Great video, technically and visually impressive, but wasted on bland generic music.

  • Quinn

    @Nathan.

You’re so stupid. They own their own record company. In the internet age, you have to be creative to market yourself. They’ve given us great videos to very good songs.

Grow up and realize that creativity is not a bad thing.

  • Abstract

That was great. :D And the goose was just hilarious!

  • Anon

Am I the only one that noticed the cuts, it’s not one continuous camera shot.

  • Cody

To people asking why they make these types of videos. Have you heard of a thing called having fun?

  • Cody

To Anon, I think that that is just jumps from the frames being sped up

  • Amber

I think that’s Maria the goose! There was a cute story on the evening news with Katie couric .. This guy visits her and she walks around the park with him and gets pissed at anyone else who gets near them. Aww glad to see her in this video! How cool ;)

  • Tori

I’ve never been a fan of OK Go’s music as a whole. I mean, I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to them, but I’ve always found them fairly pleasant and catchy when I do come across them. Their obscure videos are so creative and I just love to watch them from time to time.

Also, the goose really is awesome.

  • Brittany

This was really awesome, but I have to say the goose was the best part hahaha.
