Used to use very stout rubber rings on calves.

Stretch it with a tool, slip it over both testicles and let them go.

A little bawling and all was well.

I”m sorry, I don’t get the whole “bite them off ” thinking. Yes, I know it’s traditional in many cultures. What, they don’t own knives?

I’ve castrated goats….it’s called a burdizzo, people. Quick, easy, and *especially* easy if you only have to do ONE testicle. A burdizzo crushes the blood supply to the testicle and it withers away with no open wound, no blood loss, minimal pain (they usually give you a dirty look and do the goat version of a yowl for about 2 minutes). The problem is that it only does one side at a time–it’s hard to hold the goat down and get them to let you near the SECOND one, once the first is done. But it sounds like for the Sami, that won’t be a problem, since they only want half the job done anyway.

If I was a reindeer I would not be thanking people. First we overheat their frozen home and then our workaround is castrating the males?! Even if it works it just… feels… wrong…
