In WWII so called "proximity fuses" were introduced
in US artilllery. Such a fuse contained one of the very
first "pencil tubes", made from glas and thin nickel
wires/sheet. Nevertheless such tubes resisted the shock
when fired from a artillery gun.
AFAIR the shock resistance figures in data sheets were
some thousand gs.

Brian, how does any of your comment have any relevance to the technology being researched? The bird doesn't die from any of its blows proving its head can survive the impact. If there was a rodent which could jump off hundred meter cliffs and survive, even if it was stupid, it would be something to look into.

Everything about this article is wrong!

Behold the woodpecker, nature's dumbest bird. Dumber than a soccer hooligan on a 9 day bender. Dumber than that bank robber who deposited his loot directly into his bank account, at the branch he just robbed. Dumber than 'Dumb and Dumberer'!

Oh they start out plenty smart, but after a few day's of DIY carpentry? Dumb!

Whut?
