Speed is only necessary if your prey has the ability to flee quickly. I doubt whether most of those big vegetarians were fast. More likely, because of the super greenhouse effect, there was more dead dinosaur meat rotting on the ground than anyone today could ever imagine.  Something had to come along and take advantage of all that carrion. This isn't original, but at first glance, there's ambush, targeting the young and weak, pack behaviour, random scavenging, parasitic scavenging, aquatic hunting, target slower species, and so forth.
