Just as back then, people still refuse to acknowledge the simple fact that meat is all we humans need to consume. Vegetables and fruits seldom worked against scurvy even when the crews took extreme measures to obtain fresh fruit en route to the Arctic. It was Shackleton who taught us how to winter over successfully in the Arctic because he "foolishly" failed to pack enough provisions for the trip. Instead, they killed game as they came across it and every man survived to tell the tale. If you want to improve your health today, eat meat and leave the fruits and vegetables for animals.

The dodo of Mauritius were killed off providing food for sailors. Going to prehistory humans may have facilitated some of the large fauna extinctions in North America and the American Bison was very close to being wiped out as well.

Ahhh... Penguins. I remember eating them as a kid... although the kind I had were more likely to make my teeth fall out than keep them in!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_(biscuit)

On a more serious note- I wonder if any species were wiped out by human explorers the way certain galapagos tortoises are supposed to have fallen prey to human consumption. (and many other species world wide- including various birds).
