By contrast, boys showed physical aggression, which became more verbal,
merging in the later teens to the snide, aggressive, stereotyped
humorous response shown by adult males, which became less frequent in
elderly men.

I'd suggest humor is a marker for intellect.
While there could be other markers, such as proficient manipulation of the surrounding environment, tool use and improvement, many of those markers are also skills important for over all survival. So any deviation might prove harmful. But humor isn't a skill needed for survival. Which explains why it's not just the use of humor but how clever and more importantly unique it is that is behind it's attractive qualities.
Until reading this blog I had been baffled by some odd behavior I had encountered in the past. I'm a fairly humorous person over all, with a bit of a attraction to darker and off the wall humor. I also often find every day small talk kind of boring. So I sometimes say something a bit out of the norm just to shake things up.
For example my response to "How's it going?" will sometimes be "It's going.". If I receive a puzzled look I'll continue with "I don't know where it's going, how it's going, or when it's going to get there, but at least it's going.". Okay it's not Seinfeld or anything but it breaks up the day, and often get's a smile if not a chuckle so it's all good. Well at work there is a guy who is very Alpha in nature and he has the oddest reaction to my little quips. He totally hates them. I've received a mini lecture on a number of occasions from him, like "I ask how's it's going because I really want to know". Which of course is IMHO a bit of BS, but any way.
He's in no way a genius or for that matter an idiot, but I think it's his, if I might suggest, instinctive method for lessening my mating attractiveness, and therefor elevating his, because his humor is pretty much of the every day variety.
Wow, it's amazing to think that one of my more unique traits is actually linked to sex and not merely being a smart @ss. Maybe Freud was right.
