McWhorter also refers to himself as "conservative" with hand-quotes, denying that he is in fact one. He was actually more pro-Obama than Loury (a Hillary supporter). Loury has had an interesting intellectual history which I discuss here.

a lot of people are confused about reihan. but if you pin him down, he will identify as conservative.
In fact, from your posts on religion and economics, one could easily get the idea that you’re a bona fide liberal!
well, perhaps i’m a bit more *populist* when it comes to economics than i used to be. in any case, i don’t post much about politics around these parts, as i don’t have that much distinctive value to add.

Reihan seems like a smart, well-informed guy, but for some reason he’s a self-professed neoconservative (at least when it comes to foreign policy). He’s the only person I’m aware of who liked Kristol’s NYT column.

Except on immigration, I haven’t read anything so rightish from you either – and even on that, a lot of European social-democrats would tend to agree with you at leat in part (see Pim Fortuyn’s success in the Netherlands). Does Reihan Salam really lean right? I know people, including himself, describe him as a “conservative”, but I’ve listened to a several of his diavlogs and I do not recall him ever actually saying anything conservative or rightish.
