Rise and fall of celebutantes

Kim Kardashian was at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner. Wow. But it made me wonder whatever happened to Paris Hilton? Did she drop off the face of the earth? Here’s Google Trends:

The bottom panel is news, the top panel public searches. The media seems to exhibit some latency in relation to the public, but at this point they both agree: Paris is near a nobody.

But what does the GSS say about this?

    #1, why don’t you look? :-)

I’ve never understood the fame of Kardashian or Hilton, but Paris’ look is out of style. The current focus on curvy brunettes, especially those with big butts, puts Paris at a disadvantage. She recently tried a brunette hair style but at 30 she is rather old to be playing the directionless party girl. If she can reinvent a persona that she can age into she might be able to regain some fame which won’t rise and fall exclusively on her looks.

Interesting that Kardashian’s rise meshes pretty nicely with Hilton’s fall. I guess this means they’re competitors in the celebutante ecologicial niche?

It can’t be just age, as Paris Hilton is several months younger than Kim Kardashian. More likely it’s that such quasi-celebrities can capture public attention for only so long. Kardashian has been in the public eye for about five years, while Hilton has been around for twice as long.

Kim Kardashian pretty much pins her type of look, whereas Paris Hilton doesn’t.

And the Kardashians simply outpace Paris Hilton in general vulgarity and shamelessness.
