  • AG

    Reading book “Coming apart” about state of white Americans.

    As libertarian/conservative, Charles Murray glorifies good old days of religiosity, social capitals, hard working,ect.
    But religion and social connection are signs of poverty and dependency. With increased wealth, educational achievement and technology sophistication, indepence is the outcome. He is fighting a losing battle.
    Only way to go back good old days is human regression in term fo wealth, technology and enlightment.

    • TGGP

      Religion and social connection are not signs of poverty. Religious conservatism is negatively correlated with education, but Murray is writing about the social aspect of organized religion, which is positively correlated with wealth.

      Dear AG:
      For better of for worse, one of the founders of Laser Science, Nobel Prize winner Charles Townes (he is still with us, aged 98 in 2013) is neither poor, nor poorly educated. He is quit religious;
      he got so-called Templeton Prize for “Progress Toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities.”
      Sure, one counterexample does not disprove your general statement.
      For full disclosure: myself I am an atheist; not sure if poor or rich, probably middle.
