What our ancestors did best

By Razib Khan | September 5, 2011 5:49 pm

I know I’ve posted this before, but in light of another paper on archaic admixture, this video from 10 years ago keeps going through my mind….

Reader survey questions?

By Razib Khan | July 14, 2011 2:25 pm

I usually do a reader survey once a year or so. I figure I should do one soon. Usually I ask standard demographic questions, etc. Since I’ve been at Discover for over a year I assume there’s been some change since I first arrived. I’ll open up the comment thread on this post for questions to ask. I’m going to “push” my survey on Facebook and Google+ and twitter too, so hopefully I can get the N in the ~500 range as a target (I’ve gotten that high before).

Traffic patterns to this website

By Razib Khan | May 4, 2011 10:51 pm

Since I’ve been on the Discover Magazine website for one year I thought I’d look at some patterns in Google Analytics. Specifically, over the interval from April 1st 2010 to April 30th 2011 (alas, I lost access to the ScienceBlogs traffic data). For example, what institutions are people coming to this website from? To do that I just filtered for “university” and “college” in Google Analytics. Below are those institutional addresses which sent 500 or more visits to this website over the year.

Open Thread – 4/30/2011

By Razib Khan | April 30, 2011 1:30 am

I haven’t had these for a while. Following a request from the new year I’ve been mulling how to write up Population Structure and Eigenanalysis in an intelligible manner to the general readership. Still kind of at an impasse. On a logistical note, my email address is really getting on way too many mailing lists. If you want a prompt response from me twitter might be best, at least until I get overwhelmed by the noise on that service and move on to something else….

Around the Web – Tax Day 2011

By Razib Khan | April 18, 2011 1:44 pm

Jason Collins has been blogging up a storm at Evolving Economics. If you haven’t, I suggest adding his RSS feed.

Teenager stabs himself to death onstage at open mic night in front of shocked crowd at coffee shop. “”It was really unclear at first what was even happening. Because, you know, it is an open mic and it’s a performance,” the shop’s co-owner Rhonda Ealy told local television station KTVZ. “People at first thought it was some sort of theatre.” See why I avoid open mic nights?

Razib Khan, journalist?

By Razib Khan | April 13, 2011 2:26 pm

I get a fair number of emails at this point. First, I apologize to those of you who are sending me emails for whom it is not part of your job who I haven’t responded to. Stuff gets lost in the din. Second, I’m rather busy right now, so that’s why I haven’t been posting much, and won’t be doing so for a few days. But I wanted to throw out a weird question: am I a journalist? What does that mean? Journalism, unlike law and medicine, is a field without licensing. But unless you count certification as a necessary precondition (I don’t) computer programming doesn’t have licensing either. Nevertheless, we understand that someone who only does HTML/CSS isn’t a programmer. Someone who works with Python is a programmer (please no jokes!). And so forth. I’ve never given thought to a similar issue in regards to journalism. I ask because sometimes I get email referring to my status as a journalist, often in an upbraiding tone in relation to my objectivity. The main issue I would enter into the record is this: I don’t presume any great objectivity beyond what a typical person off the street would bring to the table. In other words, I’m not going to make it an attempt to package my “product” in an objective fashion. I’m pretty frank about my preferences and biases, though often I will pull my own opinion back out of the foreground when I think it gets in the way or is not relevant to the issue at hand. There are many times where I’m motivated to offer my own perspective up front, and other cases where I just let the chips fall where they may for those reading this weblog.
