Have you seen the movie “Flags of our Fathers”? It nicely and poignantly details the story behind that photo, and is based on James Bradley’s book with the same title.
The author was James Brady, not Bradley. Unfortunately he passed away last year.

‘Tis a most fitting tribute and I am glad you remembered them. I join you in saying thanks not only to all of our veterans but also to the men and women who proudly wear the uniforms of the United States’s armed forces: United States Army, United States Navy, United States Marines and the United States Coast Guard.
And on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 1918, the guns fell silent and the fury of the final salvos, and the most terrible war the planet had known till then ended with more than 16 million dead, 21 million physically wounded, tens of millions more psychologically traumatized, and a world forever changed…
It’s Armistice Day in Europe – so that photo of the US flag being raised on Iwo jima is out of place. The war in the Pacific will rage on until Fat Boy and Thin Man make their appearance on stage.

As a US combat veteran, I’d like to say thanks for showing that photo.
There is a lot more to say, but I’ll just leave it at ‘thanks’.

It’s a small way to say thanks to veterans everywhere.

We too often forget that part of this day…
